My passion is in treating individuals with Substance Use Disorders.
Struggling with substance use disorders can often be lonely, isolating and confusing. There is a lot of help offered out there, but so often what's being offered can be confusing and conflicting. Is addiction a behavior? A spiritual malady? A disease? Or is it something more? My own path of recovery took me many attempts and eventually led me to school to seek the science behind substance use disorders, to recovery rooms, to many therapists for personal recovery, and to lots of different religious avenues in search of meaning and understanding. What I found has illuminated my own path and practice. I love to pass these insights on.

Life is an adventure. Sometimes there are high mountains to climb, rough waters swim, or dragons to tame, but you don’t have to face them alone. I’m here because I know what it’s like to feel like you’re drowning. My goal as a therapist is to provide a place where people can step out of the storm and breathe. Working with teens and adults, I use trauma-informed and a harm reduction framework, at a client led pace. This means I will not expect you to “dive right in” and share your deepest fears or darkest secrets minutes after meeting me. There’s no pressure here. Whatever your focus is, that is where we will start.

I use both traditional talk therapy and the creative process to help clients express feelings and heal issues related to anxiety, depression, appropriate coping techniques, self-esteem, emotional organization, and trauma. I encourage clients to challenge their long held beliefs and feelings about themselves that are, in fact, untrue. Through this type of work you will begin to get in touch with your potential and your true nature. Personal accountability and the motivation to evolve are an important factor in the type of therapy I provide.

No one aspires to be in therapy indefinitely. My clients walk through the door bearing similar worries, but their real concerns often differ from their initial perceptions. They express desires to "fix my anxiety," "solve my depression," or "quit smoking marijuana." What they're truly communicating is, "I want to flourish, I want to deepen my relationships with those I care about, and I'm weary of these issues."

What is a good life? For hundreds of years philosophers have tried to answer this question. The search uncovered new questions, as well: What things in life are the most important? How should we relate to the world outside us? How can we best respond to the challenges of life in a way that promotes our welfare rather than hinders it? What role, if any, should religion play? Do we have moral/ethical obligations to others? If so, what are they? These are all big questions. Many behavioral/emotional problems come about because we feel as though the big questions cannot be answered. Philosophical counseling helps find these answers.

There are times in most people’s lives when we get stuck in patterns of behavior or feelings that weigh us down and hold us back. During those times, the compassionate support and guidance from a therapist may be what we need to get to the root of what hinders us, work though it, and grow past it.

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy is ideal for those who have tried other forms of therapy and treatment in the past and still feel stuck in their symptoms. The psychedelic and dissociative effects experienced during a Ketamine session creates the opportunity for a shift in perspective. Also, Ketamine has been shown to enhance the brain's ability to form new neural pathways post-dosing. The benefits of these effects are maximized when they are integrated with psychotherapeutic work.

Have you been thinking about counseling for awhile? It's not uncommon for people to consider getting help for months before they make the first call. But remember, counseling is just people talking to each other. My goal is to help you to feel comfortable. I strive to create a non-judgmental atmosphere where people can develop the insights and skills they need to grow. My approach to counseling is down to earth and practical. I use a solution-focused approach that builds on the strengths already present in my clients.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
