Many of us fall victim to black-and-white / all-or-nothing thinking. For example, you may think you are either always right or the world's biggest failure. When we ignore the nuances in everyone and everything, we limit ourselves unnecessarily. The truth is that no one is either all good or all bad and we often experience many conflicting emotions at once. Challenging this rigid way of viewing the world allows us to examine ourselves and others with more curiosity and compassion. Once we accept ourselves and reality as it is, we can change the things that do not serve us.

My specialities and practice focus include, but are not limited to, eating disorders/ body image issues, self-esteem struggles, infertility issues, postpartum/general depression and anxiety, mothering/parenting struggles, and relationship/family issues.
Have you or family members been faced with obstacles that have caused you to lose hope and courage? You may be feeling uninspired and do not believe you have the capability to be optimistic and patient. Perhaps there are internal battles to get through the day without breaking down. When working with a therapist that is "the right fit" in an environment that is "safe and supportive" I believe you can develop the physical and emotional strength to work through your struggles. In an interactive/ collaborative way we will work to make positive changes to improve your life and relationships.

The problems that I treat range from anxiety, depression, narcissistic abuse, relationship abuse, eating disorders, insomnia, trauma, to addiction and weight loss.
In the Buddhist tradition it is noted: "all that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become". This quote reflects my psychological approach to the problems people bring to me. My approach is as pragmatic as it is philosophical, as caring as it is confrontative and as serious as it is humorous. This may sound contradictory but life is not linear and therapy is a microcosm of life. The relationship that develops between a therapist and the client is the heart of the engine of change that defines therapy.

Eating disorders began rising at alarming rates over the course of the pandemic with little growth in the number of equipped providers. Many parents of children & adolescents have been left in the lurch, trying to understand what's going on with their kids & how to help. For those adolescents & emerging adults ready to confront body image and/or create a life worth living, finding a provider that understands eating disorders in & out can be a challenge.

Specialty areas of my practice include: eating disorders, substance abuse, trauma, infertility, and perinatal mood disorders.
My goal as a counselor is to provide clients with a safe space to share their concerns, struggles, and difficulties, and work towards goals of happiness, stability, and serenity. A main focus of my work is to help each client to achieve a connection between mind, body, and soul; to reach a sense and feeling of peace in the present moment. Sometimes, this includes healing wounds of the past. I firmly believe in meeting the client where they are at, and working together, step-by-step, on moving forward.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
