Substance abuse may be the symptom to the problem. Problems such as anxiety, depression, trauma and other underlying issues. may be temporarily abated however, the temporary relief found by substance use is short lived and created many additional issues such as loss of family and friends, loss of freedom, loss of employment. These issues are all encompassing and progressive. Focusing on substance use and not treating the underlining issues may impede recovery . My focus is on helping you discover the underlying issues that may be just below the surface that cause conflict and despair.

We feel uncertain, afraid, and conflicted when going through hardship. And we often are self-critical at our low points, yet we all suffer in these ways. There are understandable reasons why we struggle that have nothing to do with our worth as people and everything to do with experiences we’ve had. Through no fault of our own, we internalize a lot of unhelpful stuff that we can carry with us. I believe that therapy at its best can help people break free from old emotions, habits, and stories that are not useful anymore. And I believe therapy has the potential to empower people to live more healthy, present, and authentic lives.

As a therapist I firmly believe that transformative growth and liberation depend on first developing a trusting relationship. My individual clients are looking for space to discuss anxiety, pressures from work and family, and daily stressors with someone who recognizes the connections to social identity. When working in relationships—whether romantic, sexual, familial—my clients value the safety to each express their needs and better understand one another.

My ideal client is ready to challenge themselves to do the work and is tired of feeling stuck or on autopilot. You may have long struggled with focus, sticking to a plan, anxiety, or follow-through. You may find you're still living your life according to your upbringing, rather than in the present. As a result, you may feel overwhelmed, depressed, like you've wasted time, or have no control. I enjoy helping people through life transitions. I also have expertise working with people in startups and technology fields, decision making, and adult ADHD. If you are ready to make some changes, but need a partner, consider reaching out.

Mental health symptoms can exert a painfully strong hold on our lives and take an exhaustive toll. Symptoms can range from anxiety or depression, to a sense of being stuck, to reactions stemming from current circumstances or one’s life history. My practice is guided by the principal that you and I working collaboratively, engaged in a project of speaking and listening—being curious about one’s inner world—can have a significant impact on one’s symptoms. While this practice focuses on reducing suffering it also seeks to produce change.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
