Creatively facilitating a safe and therapeutic environment for youth and adults, with a focus on trauma; using Art Therapy, EMDR and talk therapy, both online and in person. Art Therapy and EMDR are highly effective ways of expression for many who have experienced trauma and have mental health concerns. I believe that building rapport and trust is one of the most important parts of the therapeutic relationship.

Current openings. www.jhigginscounseling.com/contact to request a free telephone consultation. Do you ever feel stuck? Find yourself worrying about the future? Or find yourself dwelling on or re-living events from the past? What about comparing yourself to others, or criticizing yourself or those around you? Maybe creating rules for yourself that feel limiting? You may have tried to solve these problems by getting rid of them, avoiding them, outsmarting them, or overpowering them. While natural, it's often unhelpful with thoughts, feelings, memories, sensations, and urges.

To be seen and known by others is an incredible feeling of connection but it means being authentic and vulnerable. Sadly, we live in a time with the illusion of connection while being more disconnected than ever. You may feel disconnected from others and even from yourself. Though you are a gift to this world, it is often blocked and unexpressed. This may leave you feeling alone and invisible. The truth is, you may be starving for deeper connection and that starvation looks like depression, anxiety, stress, and more. When you are living disconnected, you are abandoning yourself.

Life can often be challenging. You may feel you've gotten "off track" and need some direction. You may be overwhelmed with things and don't know what to do or how to make it better. It may be starting to affect your relationships, and you don't know how to stop it. You may be wondering what's wrong with you and why this keeps happening, or whether you're depressed. Perhaps you're having panic attacks that come out of nowhere. Or maybe you seem to have developed social anxiety. Perhaps you just don't feel like yourself or aren't content with your life. You want things to be different, you just don't know how to make that happen. You might be wondering whether you're always going to feel this way. You've got a lot going for you, you've accomplished quite a bit, but it still feels like there's something missing. You're not sure what else to do. Most of us feel this way at some point in our lives. Especially when trying to handle the stress of life, relationships and the impact of certain events all at once.

After all, nobody knows you better than you! Be proud of yourself. If you have found my profile, you have already taken the first step toward helping yourself, perhaps the most difficult of them. If you're looking for support toward healing past traumas or navigating any symptoms you may not even understand, such as anxiety or depression. If you're tired of "being over dramatic", having nightmares, panic attacks or even, struggling to get out of bed, take that second step and reach out. Therapy can be scary, but so can the thought of being stuck in the cycle your body and mind are finding you in now.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
