My approach uses a blend of dialectical behavioral ( DBT- emotions), acceptance and commitment (ACT- acceptance and values), cognitive behavioral (CBT- thoughts), Motivational Interviewing (a life coaching approach), trauma informed, and Christian counseling.
Everyone is looking for a safe place to be themselves. As I engage with Christians and people of color I often hear, “there’s no safe place for me get help with a counselor who is like me.” This is a lonely place to be, needing help, but feeling left out. My passion is helping Christians, people of color, refugees, immigrants, missionaries and those living cross culturally find a safe place to work through their life concerns. I enjoy helping women make safer dating choices and find their voice, and helping all my clients engage more healthily in all their relationships.

Together we will utilize a mix of CBT, DBT, ACT, and mindfulness techniques to support you in learning how to skillfully navigate whatever life obstacles that may come your way.
In this moment you are doing the best you can, even if you aren’t feeling that way. Often we find ourselves wanting to improve our life and not sure where to begin. Making the decision to start therapy and finding the right therapist you feel safe enough to be vulnerable with can feel overwhelming, leading to avoidance of going after the support you deserve. If you are feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, replaying back past disappointments, worried about the future, struggling to build meaningful relationships, regretting decisions, or struggling to navigate a life transition, I may be the right therapist for you.

We get that! We offer authentic connection to therapists who are trained in evidence based practices, including ACT, DBT, EMDR, IFS, play therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.
You haven’t felt good for months. You can’t get out of your head and your thoughts are constantly racing. Your feelings are in the driver’s seat of your life instead of you. You feel like no one understands, and you’re all alone. All you want to do is change this! Yet you feel so restless, you can't be still or concentrate on one thing for very long. We want to offer you hope that it doesn't have to stay this way. It’s possible to feel whole and alive again. Your nightmares don’t have to haunt you into the day. You can have peace and connection, with yourself and with others. Your joy and energy for life aren’t gone forever.

Throughout our work together we will utilize a mix of CBT, DBT, ACT, and mindfulness techniques to help you achieve your personal goals.
Finding a therapist we feel safe enough to be vulnerable with can be overwhelming. This alone can make the decision of whether or not to enter into therapy even more stressful than it needs to be. If you are someone who finds yourself struggling with coping with intense emotions, having difficulty making decisions you’ve later found yourself regretting, replaying back your past, worried about the future and/or having difficulties building or maintaining meaningful relationships then I may be a good fit for you!

I have had the pleasure of working in this field for more than 35 years and have found that no problem is too big, peace is a position of power, and change is another word for refine/revise/adapt. My favorite quote is: "You have to fall in love with your life." Counseling is a way to learn the barriers to doing this, the tools and techniques for doing so, and shifts in beliefs needed to attain the trickle down effect from this. Clients with whom I work often are seeking shifts in their life/spiritual view, focus, behaviors and coping skills.

I know sometimes things happen that you don't know how to handle. It can make you very anxious. You may feel you've gotten "off track" and need some direction. You may be overwhelmed and don't know what to do to make it better. You may be wondering what's wrong, and why this keeps happening. Perhaps you just don't feel like yourself - aren't content with your life - even though you've got a lot going for you. Or maybe you've built the life of your dreams, but you're not really enjoying it. It still feels like something's missing. You want things to be different, you just don't know how to make that happen. Something needs to change.

I understand the importance of integrating not only evidenced based interventions, but also compassion into the counseling relationship. I am an experienced clinical therapist with almost ten years of experience. My career began in substance abuse and then transitioned into serving individuals with mental health challenges. I use a number of strategies to help individuals achieve their goal with a few tactics as examining how perceptions impact problem behaviors, exploring how childhood events impact current functioning & coping as an adult and working to develop tools for improvement of emotional regulation. I also provide Christian counseling to those who are interested.

Life can often be challenging. You may feel you've gotten "off track" and need some direction. You may be overwhelmed with things and don't know what to do or how to make it better. It may be starting to affect your relationships, and you don't know how to stop it. You may be wondering what's wrong with you and why this keeps happening, or whether you're depressed. Perhaps you're having panic attacks that come out of nowhere. Or maybe you seem to have developed social anxiety. Perhaps you just don't feel like yourself or aren't content with your life. You want things to be different, you just don't know how to make that happen. You might be wondering whether you're always going to feel this way. You've got a lot going for you, you've accomplished quite a bit, but it still feels like there's something missing. You're not sure what else to do. Most of us feel this way at some point in our lives. Especially when trying to handle the stress of life, relationships and the impact of certain events all at once.

We sometimes find ourselves struggling with major life changes, day-to-day stressors, and physical health issues. These can lead to depression, anxiety, panic, and/or other negative feelings that can be overwhelming and cause disruption in day-to-day functioning and in relationships. Sometimes, these situations and feelings can even trigger traumas from the past, which can lead to further dysfunction. It can be a tough decision to take the step to call a therapist, but it can also be the first step towards taking back your life.

I specialize in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Therapy is a tool to help a person become the best version of themselves. Trauma, stress, unhealthy relationships, poor coping skills, emotional dys-regulation are all factors that contribute to being unwell. Counseling allows a person to work through those barriers and improve the way that they manage stress, find healthy ways to express emotions, work through trauma that has caused you harm, build tools to have healthy, productive, relationships with others and ultimately find alternate ways to cope with distressing events within our lives. A counselor is not only a therapist, but a guide and facilitator of growth.

Experiences and circumstances have a way of changing how we perceive and understand the world around us. They alter the way we act or behave, the way we think, and the way we respond to different events or challenges that may occur in life. When we take the time to explore how we act, think, and feel we can access new parts of ourselves and gain understanding of how we interact with others in our life. “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending. Let go of who you think you’re supposed to be; and embrace who you are.”

Current openings. www.jhigginscounseling.com/contact to request a free telephone consultation. Do you ever feel stuck? Find yourself worrying about the future? Or find yourself dwelling on or re-living events from the past? What about comparing yourself to others, or criticizing yourself or those around you? Maybe creating rules for yourself that feel limiting? You may have tried to solve these problems by getting rid of them, avoiding them, outsmarting them, or overpowering them. While natural, it's often unhelpful with thoughts, feelings, memories, sensations, and urges.

Are you anxious? Struggling with depression? I’m here to help. I utilize CBT, EMDR, and Motivational Interviewing with my clients and have been in practice since 2014. I believe recovery is possible for everyone and getting help is the first step toward changing your life. A little about my philosophy… I believe each person has inherent dignity and worth. One of my missions in practice is to help every client to see this reality within themselves and to restore the broken pieces that were lost along the way.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
