I combine principles of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Imago, Gottman, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness skills, concrete coping skills to increase awareness, calm, and an overall sense of ease and wellbeing.
I help individuals and couples navigate transitional phases and sabotage. I also work with addictions, including love addiction, food and body image issues. Technology and over-working too. Family estrangement. Recovering from infidelity. Relational conflicts at home and work. Attention deficit issues. My professional experience is varied and spans over 40 years. It is this role as a therapist that blends well with my life experience and my extensive training. Therapy is life-changing, and we all deserve to thrive, change old patterns, accept what may be unchangeable, feel at ease with the past, and feel grounded in the present.

Understanding the value that therapy can bring to a person’s health and wellbeing, I strive to provide a safe space for everyone who enters my office. I have experience working with a diverse population providing individual, couples and family therapy. Although I may be an expert in the field, I know my clients are experts in their own lives. By working together, I hope changes can be made and for their goals to be reached.

I work with individuals and couples seeking support around trauma, sex and sexuality, relationship concerns, self-esteem, challenging family relationships, anxiety, and OCD. My clients often share that they feel deeply understood and validated as we explore themes such as complex trauma, perfectionism, emotionally immature parents, self-worth, boundaries, and more. Couples note that our time together strengthened communication, conflict resolution, and emotional and physical intimacy. I have particular experience in supporting interracial and interfaith couples and navigating how differences in identity impact the relationship.

Deciding to start therapy can be a daunting step. I believe therapy can be helpful in exploring relationship problems, couple/ family struggles, mood symptoms, stress-related concerns, substance abuse, or learning more about yourself. My belief is that over time we can build a foundation to create a safe and trusting space to make it easier to share your experiences and challenges. By exploring aspects of your life that you find unfulfilling, we can work together towards positive change.

I provide psychoanalytic psychotherapy to adults and adolescents experiencing relationship, sexuality, and LGBTQ+ issues; anxiety; depression; eating disorders; family conflicts; and developmental/relational trauma.
Our work will be a collaborative effort to understand you — why you think, feel, believe, and behave the way you do — and to help you grow personally, professionally, and relationally. I believe that the mental health symptoms we experience are a manifestation of unresolved conflicts from our past. Coping strategies, self-help books, or other exercises can result in quick relief, but if you find yourself stuck with the same, or different, symptoms, you may need more. I largely work from a “bottom-up” approach, working to address the symptoms at the root and create self-awareness, curiosity, insight, and long-lasting change.

My PhD is in couple and family therapy, and I completed the four-year training program at the Ackerman Institute for the Family here in NYC.
People tend to find me thoughtful, patient, and down to earth, and my rigorous academic background and extensive clinical training enable me to handle just about any situation with competence, confidence, and a calm, reassuring presence. I've worked extensively with kids, teens, and young adults in both individual and family therapy, and these younger clients often experience me as fun and funny, a relatable grown-up who "gets it" without being "cringe." With adults, I tend to be more cerebral, guiding clients through thought-provoking exercises and explorations of their lives and relationships as we work together towards change.

She finds the deep value of therapy being a dynamic and relational relationship between the therapist and client, and that self expression and curious exploration is where meaning making is found.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
