How many of us want to change those dysfunctional parts of ourselves and the often accompanying sadness, anger, and anxiety but find we run into a wall over and over? Whether in intimate relationships, in friendships, in collegial relationships, or those with our family members, the familiar patterns continue to create distress and often a sense of failure. We can then find ourselves repeating destructive scenarios. I have had success in challenging these unhealthy patterns leading clients to be more present and emotionally honest in all of their relationships.

Thank you for visiting my profile. Therapy can be viewed as a journey of self-discovery and growth. This journey may include navigating relationships, developing adaptive coping skills, or processing experiences from your past. Whatever direction your journey may go, I am hopeful that I can support you along your path. Over the past seven years as a therapist, I have worked in hospitals, community clinics, and college counseling centers.

As a clinical and sport psychologist, I generally work with clients who are seeking to reach higher levels of professional, athletic and academic achievement, yet are struggling with various types of anxiety. Issues may include fear of public performance, social nervousness, panic, perfectionism, and excessive worry. I frequently support athletes and student-athletes in learning to improve athletic performance with mental skills training while managing social, academic, and work pressures.

As a clinician, I believe that our mental wellness interacts with our environment, system, culture, and relationships. I view psychotherapy as a collaborative process through which I work with you to gain better understanding of how environment, system, culture, and relationships interact with your historical and your present thoughts and emotions. Together, we identify individualized treatment goals that match your needs and desires. From there, we collaborate on designing an unique and individualized path that matches your needs.

Does this sound familiar? You’re a high achieving individual and to the outside world, you seem “fine.” Maybe even better than fine, others likely see you as having it all together. The picture of success. They’d be surprised to learn that internally you struggle to feel fine and in fact, sometimes, you feel like you’re not good enough at anything. The perfectionistic standards are impossible. The self-criticism is depleting. The emotional labor is exhausting. You’re stressed, anxious, sad, and fantasizing about what it would feel like to “drop the ball” and not be the responsible one for once. I get it! And I can help!

In my clinical practice, I work with individual adults who struggle with forming their own identity (I often say I'm a good fit for people who feel like the "black sheep" of the family), discomfort in their body (which may express itself through difficulty with food, eating patterns, discomfort with sex). Working together in a safe and open space has been helpful and productive for my patients, allowing them to gain access to a sense of worth and fullness they didn't know was possible.

Mental health is all too often misunderstood and discriminated against. This stigma can distort our perceptions and deter us from our need for help, keeping us from a natural unfolding and realignment. Nevertheless, your mental health should be your priority. The thoughts and worries we all experience are our own personal truths, regardless of whether our situation conforms to others’ ideas of mental health. I feel that getting unstuck in life requires a perceptual shift, wherein we stop judging our ‘issues’ as failings but through self-compassion proceed to creatively light our path.

I am an experienced (20+years) clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in full-time private practice on New York City's Upper West Side. I work with adults and adolescents in psychotherapy and in psychoanalysis. Many of the people with whom I work are quite intelligent, thoughtful and accomplished, but they still feel they could benefit from further personal inquiry into problems in living they may be encountering. I have multiple areas of specialization including work with mental health professionals, college students, faculty and administrators, physicians, parents, LGBTI people, racial and ethnic minorities, sexually abused people, and athletes.

I help clients overcome frustrating relationship patterns, self-sabotaging behavior, and persistent depression and anxiety. In our sessions, you'll find a thoughtful, supportive, and creative environment where clients work at the pace most comfortable for them. My approach to therapy seeks to align an individual's feelings, values, and actions. Our emotions motivate our behavior, and when we want to change but seemingly can't, we're often working against our emotional selves. Clients work with me to tap the right motivation to meet their goals. I treat individuals, couples, and parents.

I help individuals--adults, adolescents, couples, and their families--listen to themselves, express themselves, and make sense (and nonsense) of their wishes and their fears. This takes the form of an extended conversation, and includes the many features of such a conversation: interest, frankness, quiet, play, closeness, awkwardness, expressiveness, distance. Often, the work goes hand-in-hand with symptom relief, such as reducing experiences of unwanted worry, pressure, impulsivity, inhibition, and depression. It can also lead to less easily specified changes, such as feelings of freedom and creativity, new sources of enjoyment, and different experiences in relationships.

I help others manage and resolve difficulties of the heart - love, loss, and work during significant life changes/transitions; e.g., career/job change, death/illness in family, divorce, addiction/recovery, etc. I provide high-quality professional assessment and counseling/psychotherapy to people who have not accessed or have had prior unsatisfactory experiences with psychotherapy. I also do "second opinions" for anyone experiencing therapy stalemate and/or major change. During change, the terrain is stormy, bumpy, skiddy and deep. Many feel angry--a disguise to the depth of fear(s). Anxiety ensues and one doubts whether the "new" is possible.

I work with people who are searching for an authentic and interactive therapist who will help them resolve underlying issues that lead them feeling unfulfilled and dissatisfied. I provide an open and validating space so that you can freely explore your difficulties while also challenging you in a non-confrontational way. I have a flexible approach and incorporate techniques from different modalities in order to meet your individual needs. I look forward to collaborating with you and understanding what you're hoping to achieve in therapy.

Therapy is choosing yourself. Boldly. It's a lantern-lit excursion, to seek out your one-true-voice, amidst a great din. It is a space to find your sovereignty, wounds, and all. A workshop, laboratory, and garden plot, in which to build, test, and grow: so you can hone your inner leader, teammate, partner, friend, and family member. I work with the veils and walls that stand between you and becoming your best self. If you are here, you are already bold.
