As a compassionate, thoughtful, experienced and well trained postdoctoral psychologist, I am very interested in getting to know you and your struggles. I work with individuals, couples, families, and groups in many life stages, from late adolescence to older adulthood. My work is relational and collaborative, starting with creating a safe, non-judgmental space in which you can feel increasingly comfortable and open to sharing with me your symptoms, experiences, behaviors and relationship patterns. I will help you to understand and negotiate the external and internal obstacles preventing you from achieving contentment in your life.

The people I work with seek therapy for all the emotional turmoil life throws at you: pressures to perform, anxiety, marriage and premarital distress, trouble sleeping and changes in mood. Others I see come to therapy with a broader wish to understand their own nature, to see themselves and timeworn habits more clearly. In each case, my goal is not to simply fix problems in your life or marriage, but rather to help you gain control when it seems like the world around you is spinning. For couples, my goal is to move your relationship from distress to security, understanding and mutual trust.

As an Asian professional, I've been working with immigrant families and individuals since graduate school, providing individual, group, and couples therapy.
As you are reading this, welcome to therapy! My name is Yaying, and I'm a licensed mental health counselor based in NYC. Therapy might seem mysterious; but in fact, it is a journey to understand and explore the holistic self, to make sense of the world, and to make the change that you truly want. In my role as a therapist, I've been moved by witnessing the self-empowerment of my clients as they emerge from their struggles and pain. I promise I will be the bridge to help and guide you connect your different inner parts, to stand by you through this healing journey.

I help individuals and couples to live authentic, goal-directed lives.
I work with individuals feeling anxiety or depression in regard to their relationships and careers. Making choices is difficult at all stages of life for fear of "getting it wrong." With insight and modification, we can make choices with confidence. When it comes to personal and occupational relationships, we may struggle with communication, boundaries, setting limits, and voicing needs. I help my clients improve in these areas. We thoroughly evaluate communication and conflicts with others to improve effectiveness, self esteem, and esteem from others in personal relationships and at work.

Challenging the roles society has placed on us can be really difficult, but when we break through these barriers to create our own identities, life can feel so meaningful. My passion is working with individuals and couples, especially people of colour, men, and the LGBTQ community, to re-define themselves into who they truly want to be. By helping individuals be their truest selves in relationships, I also help couples create a more balanced partnership.

I have experience with a wide range of approaches and completed advanced training in couples and family therapy, trauma-informed clinical practice, palliative care, and prolonged grief therapy.
I believe therapy can help individuals harness their strengths and improve coping around challenging feelings and experiences; such as a new cancer diagnosis, chronic illness, terminal illness, grief, anxiety, stress, caregiver issues, life transitions and relationship issues. At a time when you might feel disoriented, stuck or uncertain about how to move forward, I can work with you to explore any potential barriers and identify pathways for growth. To facilitate your navigation, I strive to create an environment that feels safe and free from judgment, where you can feel seen and heard.

I treat individuals, couples, trauma, adult survivors of incest and people who abuse their partners as well as abused partners.
When people are in emotional pain, they usually try to "fix it" themselves. Making the decision to see a therapist often occurs when they have run out of options. I believe that seeking professional help is an action of hope. I can listen to people's pain because of my profound belief that therapy offers a second chance for a more satisfying life. Through the process of therapy, I can offer a more satisfying life to people who are experiencing relationship issues, depression, anxiety, unhappiness with their lives and couples who are having difficulty in their relationships.

The best therapy occurs within a trusting relationship wherein you are both challenged and supported.
My practice is devoted to helping individuals experiencing chronic anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, and difficult interpersonal relationships. I provide support and seek to establish a plan for moving toward feeling less stuck and living more authentically. I am particularly focused on enhancing capacity to understand and respond to emotions, which many of us are not taught to do in our everyday lives. I offer a genuine empathetic frame and incorporate humor into cultivating deeper awareness of self and ways of relating to others. I offer telehealth services in NY (some insurance accepted), RI, and CT.

She works with teens and adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, life transitions, and low self-esteem.
Life can be difficult. I understand how inner pain can feel both overwhelming and all- encompassing. The good news is that pain does not have to last forever, and it’s never too late to heal. Small changes lead to bigger ones, and getting started is the hardest part. Together, we’ll explore how past experiences may be preventing you from achieving the life you want and deserve. By harnessing your inner strength, I will offer tangible tools to alleviate existing pain and replace old behaviors with new ones.

If you are a woman experiencing relationship difficulties, loneliness, or a new life transition (e.g. graduating, marriage, break-up), we may be a great fit! I also specialize in working with caregivers of children with mental health disorders or physical disabilities. Through our sessions, you may find yourself smiling and laughing to cursing and crying (and if no tears are shed, we will be sure to explore why!). I will empathically and gently challenge you to help you reach your full potential. I aim to provide a space that allows for deep connection, vulnerability and even humor to effect change.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
