I became a fellow at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education at the NYU Langone School of Medicine.
I offer my clients a bedrock of honesty and stability based on evidenced-based practices in psychology and human growth. I believe in the art of asking the right questions to each client so that they can find their own way. Reflective listening coupled with skillful questioning can cut through years of pain. My therapy is not vague. It sometimes offers tough love-type feedback. But it does give each patient meaningful insight that goes beyond the surface of their lives. You can learn more about me at my website www.susanpodbielski.com

I am available for psychoanalytic psychotherapy to address life struggles, manage anxiety, depression, dissatisfaction and indecision. It is a brave and optimistic step to begin therapy which has the power to heal old wounds, renew self confidence, and expand emotional experience. I have a special interest in helping individuals and families improve communication regarding adoption and donor assisted reproduction. It is never too late to talk with children. Adult resistance to these conversations can reflect difficult life experiences, especially regarding infertility, including experiences of shame and embarrasment.

With a PhD in clinical psychology and completed psychoanalytic training, I teach psychiatry residents at Mt.
With over 30 years of private practice, I have seen major changes in people resolving problems and changing their lives for the better. You may come in with issues such as relationships difficulties, anxiety, depression, narcissism, sexual identity, coping with stress, self-sabotage, lack of confidence, problems with aging, and others, which we can deal with together. In therapy, we have an opportunity to identify repetitive patterns and assumptions that interfere with a satisfying life. I bring an analytically informed approach, while maintaining a focus on your present life and interactions, as well as using the relationship between us as a valuable source of information.

My training includes four-year psychoanalytic institute certification; Eastern Group Psychotherapy Institute, and Levels I and II of EMDR.
I view psychotherapy as a journey of self-discovery and growth. If you are feeling unfulfilled, anxious or sad psychotherapy can help. Each person has his or her own history and life circumstances. Together, we will identify and explore your patterns in order to figure out what prevents you from feeling better. Hope and understanding are the first steps in your journey toward positive change. We will carefully observe your feelings and behavior at a pace that is comfortable for you. It is a journey worth taking!

In addition to doing therapy I teach and supervise at the Manhattan Institute and the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center.
There is no simple formula for helping people but there are necessary elements: an atmosphere of safety and respect, and openess to and curiosity about the uniqueness of each person. Therapy is essentially a series of conversations in which you and I create meaningful solutions to problems and difficulties in living. The opportunity provided by therapy for greater self awareness allows people to stop self defeating behavior and destructive patterns of living and to get on with making the best use of their time and talents.

I trained at a psychoanalytic institute which taught all methods but focused on an interpersonal, relational approach.
Why do people seek help? I think people in great pain have somehow lost their ability to navigate in the world. Depression, anxiety, and fear renders a person helpless and one cannot summon their old ways of being. Recent trauma or unresolved issues can suddenly alienate a person from themselves. Often people are wrestling with unexamined fears or emotions that have long been dissociated. In the safety of the therapeutic space, the client can confront that which is most difficult with the aim of once again feeling whole, thus able to pursue, with energy and pleasure, their work and relationships.

Many of us struggle with anxiety or depression or concerns about work or relationships. These concerns often arise from unconscious fantasies which develop so early we don't see how they may be limiting our lives or undermining our relationships. In my experience, one of the most effective treatments for these unconscious limitations is individual "talk" therapy with a caring, insightful practitioner. I specialize in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, forms of therapy which foster close attunement to the nuances of each person's difficulties, and generate an evolving partnership designed to transcend anxieties that keep us from a fulfilling life.

I am a warm, supportive and non-judgmental therapist. We will work together to come to new understandings about your feelings, relationships, and behavior patterns. I favor an empathic and supportive approach which integrates psychodynamic and psychoanalytic techniques in order to help clients not only reduce symptoms, but to also explore and understand the underlying issues. I believe in helping clients identify their strengths to enable them to overcome these issues. I collaborate with and provide referrals to nutritionists, psychiatrists, and physicians as needed.

In addition, my psychoanalytic training allows me to address issues in-depth and with the amount of stamina and intensity needed to work through them and move ahead.
Feeling stuck? Find yourself having the same problems at work or in your personal relationships? Perhaps you can even identify specific ways you're sabotaging yourself... You are not alone. As part of development, we learn adaptive as well as maladaptive ways of coping; which can be frustrating and feel hopeless, but your life doesn't have to stay this way. With focused effort and collaboration, we can work to understand how your life got to this point and what you can do to make things better. Psychotherapy is about increasing awareness which leads to freedom.
