I'm an interactive individual and couples therapist who believes that sometimes a short series of focused sessions can resolve a painful dilemma, while complicated, deeply rooted issues may call for a substantial course of treatment. In either case, your therapy should look like nobody else's -- because it takes its shape uniquely around you. I'm experienced and well-trained. When we meet, I'll listen with care and speak honestly about how I see your particular situation and what I think would help.

I am an experienced hospice executive, familiar with Medicare and care of elder patients.
Individual Therapy: If therapy is not moving you palpably forward, you're wasting your time. I will help you overcome your personal and family history and pave the way for progress. Want to clarify your goals? I can help you to get there. Couples therapy: Relationships are sacred endeavors. My job is to help you unravel the layers of misunderstandings, resentments and disappointments and replace them with the skills of listening and love. Why do we treat our friends better than our partners? Because we've forgotten the art of friendship within love.

I work with people who struggle with problems of living. Psychotherapy can address these struggles; it helps you better understand how you are troubled, identify what you want to change, explore why it is hard to change, and enable you to become more what you want to be. I also work with people who simply want to understand themselves better and enrich their lives.

I am a licensed Psychoanalyst and Clinical Social Worker with more than 30 years of professional experience and training. My therapeutic approach aims at helping people learn to overcome negative feelings and patterns. Using specific therapeutic methods I help people from feeling driven and oppressed by feelings of anxiety or depression. My practice is grounded in the belief that individuals will live life fully and with a high degree of satisfaction once they have been able to work through and integrate the negative feelings that hold them back. Then they are able to get what they want from the world.

As a couples counselor working with ethnically and culturally diverse clients, I have seen that loving your partner is not enough for a good relationship. Learning how to communicate in a caring way, even when upset; and learning to accept that one's needs will not be ideally met are key in making relationships work. That’s why my work with couples focuses on resolving conflicts through improved communication and workable compromises. I provide guidelines and techniques to help couples avoid bringing up the negative past, playing the blame game, and making dismissive comments about the relationship.

I believe that all individuals can achieve growth, resiliency, and optimal potential despite and sometimes because of their challenges. In addition to working with individuals with anxiety, depression, and ADHD, I have worked with medically and neurologically complex individuals though my clinical psychology Ph.D. program, which had a health emphasis, as well as my practicum experiences at major hospitals throughout the NYC area and my pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where I obtained specialized training in cognitive remediation.

I am committed to creating an atmosphere of trust, respect, and honesty. I listen attentively and believe that the relationship that we create together is the most important tool for our work together. My orientation is also psychodynamic, which means that I believe in the central role of the unconscious, past history and emotional forces. I apply this approach to many kinds of issues (depression, anxiety, addiction, difficulty in interpersonal relationships, general sense of dissatisfaction with life). My goal is to help you develop the awareness, insight, and psychological skills that you will be able to use later on your own.

The decision to seek therapy can be a difficult one. I am a caring, empathetic therapist with over 20 years experience who can help with relationship issues, reducing anxiety and stress, and improving depressive symptoms. I can also help with addictive behaviors--drugs and alcohol, food--to help you to understand and reduce these behaviors. We can work together short-term or solution-focused, or I can offer supportive, on-going therapy. We can explore the obstacles that may be holding you back from the life you want to live. I am currently accepting new patients.

Welcome! You have taken the first step, which is quite often the most difficult; you are exploring therapists and reaching out. Finding the right therapist can be very overwhelming, especially during what is likely a stressful time in your life. My approach to therapy is warm and welcoming. I believe that work can be done only when there is a mutually respectful relationship and safe space for my clients, which is exactly what I strive to achieve. No matter how anxious or stressed you may feel, we will work through it together.

I have a diverse background with training in child and adult therapy, nutritional counseling, life coaching, and logotherapy. I am best suited to work people experiencing anxiety and depression. Psychotherapy typically focuses on how our past experiences drive us as adults while coaching is more forward-looking, and focuses on setting goals and looking at obstacles that get in the way of reaching those goals. Logotherapy is geared toward helping people find meaning and purpose in life. Child therapy helps children become more expressive of their emotions and develop more awareness of their strengths and to apply them in life.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
