Past President of the Council for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
Experience has taught me that each person is unique and must be listened to, in an open nonjudgmental manner focusing on the singularity of their own life. No matter how traumatic an event could be, there are always important reasons that maintain a person trapped in her/his own life. Discovering and understanding these reasons is central to unlock a traumatic situation. Anxiety, depression, panic attacks, eating disorders, difficulties to connect or relate to others as well as the different types of addictions are all symptoms connected with a particular way that someone has to deal with suffering.

"When an inner situation is not made conscious it appears outside as fate." (C.G. Jung) I believe that who we are--and the emotional and psychological distress we experience--are often rooted in our relationships with others, as well as in our relationship with ourselves. However, I also believe that we are born with innate characteristics and orientations--many unconscious--that affect how we participate in those same relationships. Therefore, I use a variety of styles, including psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, relational and cognitive-behavioral, based on the specific needs of a given client.

I have 20+ yrs of individual and group therapy in various theoretical orientations: CBT, Psychodynamic, Psychoanalytic, Psychodrama, Energy, and Mind-Body work (as patient and clinician).
I view psychotherapy as a way to reach intellectual, emotional, and spiritual balance. I combine psychoanalytic understanding with mind-body techniques. I focus on uncovering patterns and barriers that prevent you from reaching your potential and become your true self. Psychotherapy is a process that allows us to gain insight into better understanding of yourself and others, to learn new, more constructive ways of dealing with difficulties, and more enjoyable ways of relating to others and yourself. It is a way to uncover clarity of our past, present, and future, which can lead to wisdom of oneself, life, and the peace of mind.

My psychoanalytic training lets me find patterns in your thinking that undermine your goals.
Change, either planned or unexpected, is the most anxiety provoking factor in our lives - and the most constant! You need the skills to confront change, to stay calm and self-confident, to analyze and take effective action. Unconscious mental habits - distrust of others, self doubt - can interfere with this process. I will work with you to identify and CHANGE those bad habits. I work in a multi-faceted approach through psychoanalytic exploration of key life experiences and a systematic program of change through cognitive-behavioral techniques, relaxation, and meditation. It works!

Drawing from contemporary psychoanalytic, psychodynamic, and relational perspectives, I believe that lasting healing comes from addressing the deeper patterns that keep people feeling stuck.
Welcome. I support individuals navigating feelings of anxiety, disconnection, overwhelm, or a sense of being lost or alone. Whether these emotions stem from a recent experience or have lingered beneath the surface for some time, I provide a safe space to explore and understand them. My areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, grief, identity exploration, life transitions, ecological grief, and climate anxiety. I approach therapy with compassion, curiosity, and warmth.

I'm a senior Psychologist/ Psychoanalyst; having completed my Psychoanalytic Training at NYU PostDoctoral Program.
You are more powerful than you realize and often shape the outcomes you experience in life. Sometimes those outcomes are other than what you want; or they don't live up to your expectations. Your contributions may be unconscious, or perhaps rooted in ineffective thinking. I help you understand your contributions to those outcomes. My job: to help you own your power, think through, and shape your outcomes. How long will you be with me? Just long enough to get the job done; my career is in this office, not yours! My thinking is psychodynamic and work style, eclectic.

I work with both individuals and couples, guided by both psychoanalytic theory and an appreciation for deeply rooted lifelong attachment patterns.
I have learned the "connection" we make in therapy will lead to fruitful change. We begin by working on very specific concerns, to the more elusive, abstract conflicts of a more esoteric life that aren't so simple to characterize. Everyone comes to therapy with different hopes, unique needs, and a desire to seek what is transformational. I work to create a trusting relationship with all of my patients. In the initial sessions, I focus on what brings you to therapy at this moment in time and to establish a working rapport where you feel safe and listened to, without judgement. Therapy is a unique opportunity to find your voice,

I have graduate degrees from the University of Chicago and The Derner Institute of Psychological Studies at Adelphi and completed psychoanalytic training at Columbia University where I am also on the faculty.
People often seek therapy at a point where life feels too stressful or off-kilter. This point might emerge gradually or occur in the face of acute problems, stressors or losses that feel overwhelming. Effective therapy requires commitment and engagement on both the part of the therapist and patient and often involves exploring parts of oneself and one’s life that feel elusive or painful. The pursuit of change and growth can take time, however there is a remarkable payoff to effective treatment, which can include greater freedom and satisfaction in the areas of love and intimacy, family and relationships, creativity and work.

My Interpersonal Psychoanalytic training informs both my short and long term work.
My clients come to me when they are experiencing an increase in stress and anxiety or are feeling sad, lonely or overwhelmed. Something in their life is not working or is suddenly more difficult than before. I help my clients develop an appreciation for their own stories and to make sense of uncomfortable feelings that prevent them from pursuing goals, that cause problems in relationships or hold them back from creating more satisfying and fulfilling social, family and work lives.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
