I use an integrative approach to healing, and draw on cognitive-behavioral as well as psychodynamic modalities.
Is it time to put your life (or certain aspects of it) up for review? Are you interested in reflecting on what patterns, beliefs, behaviors, values, or relationships may no longer be serving you? With a warm style and an encouraging sense of humor, I'll collaborate with you to identify roadblocks that are keeping you stuck and we'll chart a new path moving forward. No matter our focus, we’ll make sure to develop an individualized treatment plan that honors your specific treatment goals. I strike a balance between unconditional acceptance of who you are and making sure to appropriately challenge you to ensure growth and healing.

I use a wide range of clinical techniques including cognitive behavioral as well as relational and psychoanalytically-oriented models.
There are many approaches to psychotherapy. Some techniques focus solely on insight and history without targeting specific issues for change. Others aim to identify and attack behavioral concerns but do not pave the way for growth with empathy and compassion. In the former, patients feel soothed and understood but ultimately frustrated by a lack of change, not knowing how to break free of their problematic patterns of behavior. In the latter, patients can feel as though they are following one-size-fits-all instructions from the therapist and develop feelings of shame over the challenges they face, not knowing from where the issues came.

My clinical approach is interactive and integrates contemporary psychoanalytic theory with other approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness practice and Somatic Experiencing, a mind/body-based trauma resolution method that works directly with the nervous system -- where all mental health symptoms reside - to resolve symptoms and promote emotional healing.
As a therapist I am privileged to help. I provide a space where clients can rediscover or develop authentic selves and deepen emotional connections with others. I enable clients to recognize how thoughts, beliefs and values affect relationships and to consider new ways of being in the world; to develop healthier adaptive strategies when facing problems, and to work through past and present trauma, grief, and losses.Psychotherapy does not have to be painful - it can be a safe, creative, and playful process of strengthening one's health and well-being.

I am a compassionate humanist firmly grounded in science and research. I don’t judge, condemn, or rate anyone. Instead, I unconditionally accept all people and encourage them to find new ways to approach life with a minimum of fear and turmoil. I studied Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with its developer, Dr. Albert Ellis, with whom I have written 3 books and numerous articles. My work includes authoring 6 books, 7 chapters, and 20 journal articles. I am a Professor in NYU’s MA psychology program and an examiner for psychologists seeking board certification. But foremost, I am a clinician who understands emotional pain.
