Treatment for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, OCD, fears/phobias, personality disorders, addictions, eating disorders, and more.
People experience different challenges in their lives that are sometimes difficult to work through alone. But together we can make sense of it, and achieve a healthier, happier life. By providing a safe and empathic space, we can explore those challenges. My approach to each and every session is to be with you, through truly listening, providing a judgment-free environment, respectful challenge, and mutual participation throughout the therapeutic process. As a team, you and I will process the emotional, cognitive, physical, familial, and spiritual factors impacting your life, and preventing you from achieving your goals.

While I have a commitment to those people who are experiencing anxiety and/or depression having to do with disruptive life changes. At the present time the Pandemic has forced the need to change, even so many of the habits that have worked for us. The sense of isolation has exponentially heightened fears and whatever loneliness existed before is exacerbated. This has changed my practice both physically and as it relates to style. Support is so necessary to guide the way to management of fears and management of major transitions. My background includes many years at the Out Patient Unit of the Veterans Hospital Post Traumatic Stress

I am passionate about helping people improve their well-being and regain a sense of hope. Trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), I help clients improve sleep by exploring beliefs and circadian rhythm issues that hinder sleep. CBT-I is a powerful protocol that the American College of Physicians recognizes as the first-line treatment for adults with chronic insomnia. In addition to sleep therapy, I utilize biofeedback to train heart rate variability (HRV), which aids in regulating nervous system functioning, decreasing anxiety, enhancing emotional regulation, and improving stress management.

I work with a diverse range of clientele including young adults, those with Serious and Persistent Mental Illnesses, eating disorders, anxiety, OCD, personality disorders, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. I’ve worked for many years with under-resourced populations in New York City which has shaped my worldview and approach to therapy. My work has taught me to be an optimist and I've witnessed first-hand incredible growth and resiliency in those with whom I've worked with. I typically take a more modern approach to therapy and am non-judgmental, supportive, direct, and genuine.

While my passion lies in working with teenagers and young adults, addressing a spectrum of issues including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, disordered eating, identity crises, OCD, trauma, and life transitions, I'm enthusiastic about assisting individuals of diverse age groups and backgrounds.
Welcome! I'm Quin Axelson, and I am so glad that you are here. As a warm and intuitive Master’s level counseling student at New York University’s Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness program, I believe in the transformative power of therapy to bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be. Utilizing an integrative approach, I draw from various evidence-based techniques including cognitive-behavioral, person-centered, and relational therapy. Do not worry if these terms are unfamiliar; I recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all model, and thus, center my work around the unique needs of each individual.

Hi! My name is John Zufall, LCSW. I go by my middle name, Mel. I have over 20 years of experience working with diverse populations including clients dealing with addictions, depression, anxiety, OCD, and LGBTQIA+ issues, among others. While my approach to therapy is a cognitive behavioral approach, I believe therapy is best when tailored to the specific needs of the client. Like many in this field, my own experience in therapy was a major influence in terms of my wanting a career as a therapist. The therapeutic process can be such a powerful tool in terms of personal growth and leading a successful life

My expertise is in working with anxiety, OCD, depression, and other difficulties, including life transitions, perfectionism, doubt/indecision, insomnia, and more. I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from Yale University and specialize in evidence-based therapies (i.e., ACT, ERP, and mindfulness-based CBT). In addition to being the gold-standard anxiety treatments, these approaches provide valuable tools for anyone interested in enhancing well-being and personal growth. Together, we will explore new ways to respond to thoughts and feelings and make behavioral changes, with more flexibility, awareness, self-compassion, and purpose.

In addition to specialized training in traditional methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, parenting, bio/neurofeedback, anxiety & OCD therapy, I devoted my career to research & help patients understand the science behind their emotions & to learn to deal with them effectively.
Like most human beings, you are doing your best trying to deal with the cards life dealt you. You are motivated and want to improve the quality of your life; only life hasn’t always provided you with the answers. If you are like most people, you have put in a lot of effort and often ended up disappointed in those ‘proven’ methods. However, your life and your brain are unique. Just like you can’t debate whether a hammer or screwdriver is ‘better’, there is no ‘best’ psychological method.

My passion is treating severe OCD and anxiety. My clients joke that I am "not a talk therapist, but a 'do' therapist," as sessions are often very active and skills focused. I provide evidence-based treatments (methods proven by research to be more effective than general talk therapy), as my goal is to help people get results as soon as possible. In addition to providing therapy I am the founding director of two Western NY based clinics: Genesee Valley Psychology and Meridian Psychology Practice. I am also affiliated with the University of Rochester Medical Center and McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
