Couples and individuals seeking therapy deserve tremendous respect. In my work with relationships, I offer Emotion Focus Therapy ( EFT) to help both partners to get unstuck from the repetitive patterns of emotional disconnect, that lead to fights or deadening silence. As a couples' therapist with an advanced training in Gottman therapy, I integrate it in my work when needed. My approach to individual treatment is Internal Family Systems (IFS) where you get to know your inner world, become more present, less reactive, and more capable of self-healing. I work both with monogamous and consensual non-monogamous relationships.

I practice in both NYC and Dobbs Ferry; in person and virtually (depending on the day we meet). I draw on my clinical, activist and legal backgrounds. I work primarily with individuals and couples and in that work, I draw on Emotion Focused Therapy ( EFT), for which I have been trained. I also draw on my extensive expertise in working with trauma and attachment. I incorporate sensory or body-based modalities as we go and when relevant, I create room to explore how our political culture impacts our felt sense of well-being. I am an active presence in the room and I use both humor and authentic connection.

My work with couples is based on EFT.
I have been practicing psychotherapy with individuals and couples for over 20 years. I work with individual patients mostly using EMDR, a therapeutic technique to clear traumatic experiences which get "stuck" in emotions, body and brain and cause symptoms which bring clients into therapy. My other approaches to Individual Therapy are Psychodynamic and Mindfulness- based therapies. My reputation is that I am straight forward without harshness and I give constructive feedback. My goal is to understand root causes of the problems that bring people to therapy. We work together to gain insight and develop strategies to make change.

My approach is informed by psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, relational, emotionally focused therapy ( EFT), and mindfulness practices and interventions.
If you are beginning your search for a therapist, you have already taken a courageous step. You may be at a place where the feelings you are experiencing and the circumstances you are in are creating a lot of distress. You want help, but perhaps are not sure what the therapy process is really all about. Or, you may be familiar with therapy and are looking to start again. I welcome you to start exactly where you are, and I hope that my empathic, non-judgmental, interactive approach helps you to feel that you have taken the right step.

Life is amazing yet difficult. People are always adapting to change whether they want to or not. These adaptations can take a toll on us which is why its always important to check in on you, yea the inner you, and make sure that "you" are okay. That is why seeking a therapist is top priority. I provide support for individuals, couples, families, and groups. I support all individuals and am an Ally for inclusivity regarding race, religion, ability, gender, sexuality, body type, and age. I also have experience working with Neurodivergent individuals both verbal vocal and non-verbal vocal. I work with adults, children, and teens.

Applications for South Asian Men's Group - more info under "Gallery." I am a Bangladeshi-American psychotherapist trained at Smith College, and my primary goal in therapy is to help you live a life that deeply aligns with your truest self. Having lived in both Bangladesh and the US, I know firsthand the struggle of feeling as if we are “too much” or “too little” of the identity we are often expected to embody. As a queer woman of color who grew up in predominantly homogeneous spaces, I strongly believe in the importance of not just allowing, but encouraging and celebrating the full expression of our nuanced and glorious selves.

I aim to create a safe and affirming environment for clients to feel supported in exploring past and present experiences. I deeply values the vulnerability of my clients, and seek to build a therapeutic relationship that is founded in collaboration, trust, and empathy. I believe in each client’s innate strengths, and I am interested in identifying and working through barriers to better understand the narratives we often have about ourselves. I work collaboratively to help clients rework these stories to fully honor who they want to be.

I believe therapy is a gift that allows one's inner strength to emerge while our personal journey through life's experiences makes us who we are. My own journey has led me to my career as a therapist which allows me the honor and opportunity to work together with my clients to recognize their own strengths and limitations in achieving their goals. All this takes place within a strong, non-judgmental, therapeutic relationship that is built on empathy, trust, safety, and compassion. I have a calm, warm, relaxed style and believe in creating a safe space for you where compassion, support, and humour can live.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
