I am a licensed clinical social worker with a certificate in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. My special strength is connecting to clients and helping them to feel comfortable and understood. I never forget that doing therapy is a two way process and that I learn a lot from clients' life experience. I view therapy as the opportunity to understand and empower oneself.

I help people to become more aware of their emotions and ways of thinking about concerns and problems that impact them in daily life. I believe that awareness leads to a better understanding which enhances coping skills. I am also interested in how an individual is impacted emotionally by their environment and social context. People who work with me comment on my being authentic and genuine, willing to engage and challenge as necessary.

Psychotherapy can be a transformative and healing experience, which may seem like a good thing—and it often is—but change can also be scary because it might mean shedding long-standing ways of being in the world and adopting new ones. Additionally, it is normal to be anxious about trusting your inner life to someone you don’t know—to risk being vulnerable by disclosing feelings of shame, desire, regret, fear, rage, etc. A sense of safety and trust develops slowly over time, and depends on feeling accepted, cared for and understood. For these reasons it takes courage to engage in therapy. I try to establish a relationship and...

Sometimes it feels like the world conspires against our authenticity. We often face pressure to be someone we’re not, or to paper over our complex identities for others’ comfort and ease of understanding. I was born in Austin, Texas to a Caucasian mother and African-American father before I was adopted by my Jewish parents at 2 days old. I faced judgement and pressure to choose binary race and class identities, whether they suited me or not. Navigating these pressures helped me deepen my empathy for others, my curiosity about other people, and a sensitivity to anyone who feels unheard, disregarded, or misunderstood.

Many of my clients struggle in relationships with themselves, family, partners, events from their past, or with certain habits. I often find that at the core of these struggles is the basic need to be understood and accepted. My approach to therapy is collaborative and you-centered; I strive to create a space that invites exploration and curiosity, rather than criticism and shame. With therapy, you'll begin to see yourself and others with less negative, isolating emotions, and in a more balanced and compassionate light.

I work from a strengths-based perspective with the belief that we all possess unique skills and abilities that can help us transcend painful circumstances, leading us to a recognition of the richness and meaning that is possible in our lives. I have worked extensively with individuals (from college age to older adulthood) and couples dealing with mental health issues such as depression; anxiety; trauma; problems in relationships; substance abuse; and bipolar disorder. I formerly specialized in psychotherapy with older adults at UCLA Health in LA for almost 10 years before moving to NYC in 2023. Now licensed in NY, NJ, CA, and MA.

As a mental health researcher and expert in culture and identity conflicts, my therapy work starts with making space for your unique lived experiences, identities, and how you show up in your different worlds. I am trained in a range of evidence-based therapy techniques including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. I help my patients learn about themselves, explore issues that have led to emotional distress, and teach skills to manage the situations at hand. Therapy can involve exploring your past, present, and future challenges and pursuing an emotional growth to handle it all.

As a former professional athlete, I have lived the structured, rigid, demanding sports life. I know what it is like to be challenged, and push yourself through successes and failures without giving up. Therapy helped me and gave me a safe space to say whatever I had on my mind. Let me give you that space to support you through the ups and downs.

Are there patterns in your life that you want to change? Unsuccessfully trying to let go of things that happened ages ago? Wrestling with relationship dynamics? Maybe you're just feeling bad (or angry, or frightened, or trapped). The essence of my work is to understand my clients. I want to "get" what has been going on with you, and to help you move forward. Yes . . . forward. Therapy is not just about going over the past. I firmly encourage my clients to consider more expansive views of themselves and their circumstances, past, present and future.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
