My research considers how non-Western ways of being can inform the psychoanalytic process.
What does the shape of our lives reveal about our ideologies and our narrative of reality? How does psychotherapy help us examine this? The analytic space is dedicated to moving beyond the pressures of institutions and societal constraints that preexist us in order to seek the particular desires and needs in each of us. In treatment, we confront ourselves and our unique experience of the world so that we can explore possibilities for transformation. I am attuned to how one’s suffering may intersect with intimate relationships, inherited traumas, and systemic oppression. I welcome patients from diverse and non-normative backgrounds.

Psychoanalytic therapy offers us the best chance at long-term, meaningful change.
People seek therapy because they are suffering. Your suffering may take the form of anxiety, depression, grief, or anger. It may stem from questions about relationships, career, sex, or gender-identity. I will not offer you a one-size-fits-all approach to any issue. Instead, I will open up a space that allows you to speak freely about your experience. I will listen intently and without judgment. Together, we will work towards a richer and more joyful life.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy asks that each person speak about these issues and about their fantasies and dreams.
Everyone has their own unique and idiosyncratic means of getting in their own way whether or not they are aware of it. Unfortunately, we are also attached to these ways of hindering ourselves. This is perhaps at the source of most experiences of suffering and can manifest in various symptoms such as anxiety, depression, anger, inhibitions and relationship or sexual issues.

Using a psychoanalytic lens, I provide a nurturing environment to explore past and present, desire and fantasy, lack and pain.
Navigating the labyrinth of contemporary life can feel overwhelming, leaving us adrift in a sea of uncertainty, anxiety, and existential questioning. As we begin to understand the unconscious - what our symptoms communicate to us and how they have come to structure us - we shed the abounding sense of lack that we've carried and endured for years. Through this process, a novel way of being in the world emerges.

I work with adolescents and adults from diverse backgrounds, addressing concerns like anxiety, depression, and addiction. I also help with issues around careers, desire, and creative work. Many experience feelings of shame, guilt, and a lack of direction, which often affect their relationships with others and their work, family, and romantic lives. My sessions involve focused talk therapy. By unpacking personal narratives—including day-to-day feelings—we aim to understand the underlying forces in these stories. I use a psychoanalytic approach influenced by Lacan and Freud, focusing on how the unconscious shapes behavior.

For it is this desire that, ultimately, psychoanalytic therapy follows.
Psychoanalytic therapy can often appear old fashioned today. Who has the time to speak? Psychoanalytic therapy is often sought out after attempts at medication and lifestyle changes have proved frustrating. Its wager on how to deal with these frustrations is simple: through an invitation to speak.

Using a psychoanalytic lens, we will follow conscious thoughts to unconscious wishes.
The source of your discomfort may seem obvious or feel out of reach. Whatever the case, exploring your experience has the power to be revealing and, in that way, transformative. My aim as a therapist is to together gain a better understanding of who you are and why you are — of your patterns, instincts, desires. Through this process we will challenge fixed ideas and, in doing so, build out a larger picture of your life and you within it.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is about cultivating a capacity to think and work through the difficult areas in our emotional and psychic lives. Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed, unmotivated in your daily life, wanting more from your relationships. You might be looking for a space from which to begin reflecting on painful or jarring experiences. By elaborating and asking questions of our trauma, anxiety, depression, isolation, and loneliness, we can begin to observe how we move through our lives, to figure out how to evolve and grow. In all this, there is also room to be playful and creative, to reconnect with our desires.

My practice is psychoanalytically based, relationally oriented, personalized, creative and built on many years of experience working with individuals, couples and families in the fields of education, child & family welfare, community mental health, addiction medicine, career development and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
Anxieties, insecurity, depression, difficult patterns in relationships or work, and problems focusing can be understood and changed, so you have more energy and confidence to devote to living. Become more connected to yourself and others through a specialized process of exploration with a trained professional, and see a difference in your life. A therapist's expertise and experience are very important, but the key ingredient of effective therapy is a "good fit" between you and your therapist. If you'd like to see how it would be to work together, I would be pleased to hear from you.

I also serve as an Associate Editor for the nationally-recognized journal, Psychoanalytic Perspectives, as well as a Board Member of the Professional Association for NIP.
I believe psychotherapy is a life-changing process that can expand one's capacity for self-reflection and self-awareness, thereby paving the way for more meaningful relationships and a more fulfilling life. I endeavor to help my patients find the tools they need to feel the most productive and the most alive. My approach is psychodynamically-oriented; however, my years of practicing have taught me that there is no one-size-fits-all model. I believe each person has different needs, and I bring both my experience and collaborative skills to each treatment. I have been described as empathic, relatable, and warm.

Psychoanalytic Therapists
Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
