Many have described me as gentle, empathic, and non-judgmental.
I firmly believe that we as hu man beings grow in relationships as an empathic and attuned other bears witness to our struggles; my role is to provide a safe environment and a skilled ear in which you are able to become better acquainted with yourself: your thinking, behavior, and feelings so that you can ultimately live a more fulfilled life. For some this means a few months of work and for others a few years.

If you have reached the conclusion that talk therapy does little for anxiety, insomnia, stress, 1) you're not alone, and 2) there is an alternative. For 29 years I've melded hypnosis, acupuncture, and hormone-balancing herbs to positive effect. My patients tell me they benefit from the somatic therapies I use to relax the overloaded nervous system (I know, in NYC?). Insurance covered. Time permitting, I am taking new patients and gladly offer a free consultation. Because Carpé Diem.

I work with you to neutralize negative messages about you that you've heard from many people all your life that have become your negative self-talk as well as help you find and stick with "work-arounds" for problem areas and coping mechanisms for dealing with unfair criticisms.
What's troubling you? Is it lack of concentration, easy startle reaction, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep? Are you disorganized or do people tell you you're disorganized? Are you highly organized and have trouble altering your plans? Do you day-dream & lose track of conversations or what's being said in class or a meeting? If these describe you it may be that you are experiencing the effects of Adult Attention-Deficit Disorder. You're not alone and there is help. I work with people who experience the difficulties this can pose on a regular basis.

My therapeutic approach integrates hu manistic as well as cognitive-behavioral theories to help sort through the various challenges you may be facing at this time.
I understand that seeking “counseling” or “therapy” can be very broad and mean different things. It can be intimidating at first if you haven’t had any prior experience or surprising to experience different therapeutic approaches if you have previously experienced counseling. I want to tell you that I’m here to provide assistance for the needs that you have currently in your life. I see counseling as a dual relationship where you get to be on the driver’s seat and choose where to go on this journey. I seat next to you pointing out details, providing useful information or simply supporting you as you reach towards your destination.

If you struggle with sexual compulsivity, you know that regaining control of your life requires more than just management of sexual behavior. Sexual compulsivity frequently masks underlying anxiety, depression and trauma, all of which can wreak havoc on our relationships with ourselves and others. Using a “here-and-now” approach, I work with individuals, couples and groups to help heighten awareness of problematic behaviors, recognize patterns that inhibit personal growth, and restore choice in decision-making.

Additionally, I am versed in and respectful to the fluid gamut of relationship styles - from strict monogamy to the many permutations of ethical polyamory.
As a firm believer in a mind-body-spirit approach to psychological health, I incorporate a long history of multi-disciplinary spiritual practice and investigation with my graduate training in relationship / family therapy into a holistic perspective that utilizes transitions and crises as opportunities to deepen insight and life skills that better navigate and manage them. In terms of couples work, I help with communications, developing conflict resolution strategies, healing from infidelities, addiction/codependency, and other sexual issues by examining your familial/relational histories and teaching a variety of guideposts to help you be your best selves, together and individually.

It's hard to change behaviors & ways of thinking that have outlived their usefulness, but it can be done. In my work I help people 1. understand how the problem became part of their life & how it stays embedded 2. work through the uncomfortable feelings that emerge when one lets go of what's familiar and moves into the unknown 3. build on what already works to develop more flexible, satisfying ways of interacting & being in the world. I work collaboratively and take an affirmative approach, recognizing your creativity and building on your strengths.

Sometimes it's the small things that throw you off - a kind act goes unappreciated, a loved one doesn't pick up your call, someone cuts in front of you on line - any one of these situations can open a core wound, ushering in anxiety or depression. But what if I told you that you can learn to avoid falling into reactive states and move through your world in serenity and happiness? There resides in you a boundless source of love and joy - a source that together we can tap.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
