Therapy is a collaboration designed to help you to relieve distress, gain insight and experience deeper connections with others. Perhaps you feel stuck, or that your life lacks passion or vitality. Working together we can connect your past with your present in a new configuration in order to promote a more satisfying life. It all starts with feeling deeply heard and understood.

Dealing with anxiety or depression can be very distressing. In those moments or times, our priority becomes finding relief. However, the bigger picture is that we must focus on learning the tools that shift our mood and create an emotionally more fulfilling lifestyle. Think about the times when you felt completely confident and happy. It is very unlikely you felt any emotional discomfort. An elevated and confident emotional state will banish emotional distress. It is the antidote. Why? Anxiety and depression, which result from fear and doubt, have no place when confidence and optimism take hold.

I work with adult clients experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and adjustment difficulties to new life stressors. I have extensive experience working with foreign-born clients, addressing cross-cultural issues, as well as the emotional impact of uprooting, relocating, and redefining oneself in a new environment. I am trilingual, practicing in English, French, and Turkish. I have completed psychoanalytic training at the Karen Horney Psychoanalytic Institute. I have been in practice for twenty years. In practicing psychotherapy I blend introspective exploration of one self with cognitive, supportive and problem solving approaches.

We all encounter stress, setbacks, and challenges in life. In my work with adults, many common symptoms are experienced: Difficulty sleeping, difficulty concentrating, feelng jittery - the recognition that we are working too much and not taking good care of ourselves, or are unhappy with our body image - or not enjoying things we once liked to do, inclined to withdraw from relationshops or having trouble communicating; felt irritable, easily provoked to argument, used alcohol (shopping, gambling, etc.) as a means of escape, and felt sad, alone, or tired? These are all symptoms that something needs to change.

Things are not going the way you want. Maybe you're having the same struggles you've had before. You're stressed, anxious, unhappy. You have many responsibilities, you're frustrated, under so much pressure. But, at the end of the day, you don't have the relationship or life you want. It seems easier for other people. You may be feeling alone or lonely. It eats away at your confidence. In private you might question your self-worth, think you're not good enough. Maybe others think you have it all together, or they rely on you. It is especially confusing if you are successful in other areas. You are used to fixing things on your own.

Why do you need a therapist when you have the internet? With access to an abundance of health information via the internet, you can read about conditions, self-diagnosis, self-treat, and can request specific medications from your doctor. So why go to therapy? -- Even with the best information, change is challenging. One reason for this is that thoughts and emotions are not readily exchanged for what we desire. Thus concrete solutions are often not easily implemented. Therapy helps us to understand why we are not getting our desired effect and to define routes toward positive change.

At The Sexuality, Attachment, and Trauma Project, we provide identity-affirming care for all communities. Our patients are people, not problems, and we work with each person differently. We treat a range of issues related to sexuality and gender. These include out-of-control sexual behavior, sometimes labeled sex addiction (although we’re not fans of labels). Patients also come to us for intimacy anxiety, sexual compulsivity, gender and orientation confusion, LGBTQ+ issues, and family trauma.

In my practice I try to customize the therapy to the needs of each individual patient--whether the person is looking for help with a short-term, acute crisis; a longer-term but more focused problem, such as depression or anxiety; or more deeply entrenched difficulties with identity, relationships, or general sense of direction and meaning in life. Regardless of the treatment approach used, however, all effective therapy is built on a foundation of trust, compassion and empathy. I therefore work to build a collaborative relationship with my patients, so we can work together to achieve agreed-upon goals.

I am a trauma-informed licensed psychologist who has trained in cognitive-behavioral, sensorimotor psychotherapy, and relational psychodynamic approaches. As an integrative therapist, I attempt to tailor treatment to each individual's needs using relevant interventions and theories. In working interpersonally and collaboratively, we may explore one's individual history, identities/roles, family and cultural dynamics, strengths, values, and goals. Through individual and couples therapy, I enjoy working with adults who identify feeling stuck, lost, alone, misunderstood, frustrated, anxious, disconnected, indifferent, and depressed.

Beginning therapy is a big deal. Talking about oneself to someone you’ve never met before can be daunting. Will you be judged? Given advice you didn’t ask for? Not given feedback you really need? You’ve probably been grappling with the issues that prompted you to make the appointment for some time, and may feel badly that you couldn’t figure it out yourself. In that first session I’ll be listening to understand what’s the matter but also how you’re experiencing the problem. We may need to work together to shift self-criticism and judgment to curiosity and compassion so that you can mobilize your inner strengths.

Do you feel that you are "just getting by" or not even that? Have you been experiencing feelings of anxiety, depression or being overwhelmed? Do you feel that you and your spouse/significant other are not "connecting" in the way that you would like? Are you unable to stop self-destructive behaviors such as sexual acting out, compulsive use of pornography, alcohol or drug abuse, eating or gambling? Has a recent crisis made you feel out of control or unable to handle things as you have in the past? Feeling good is important!
