As a psychoanalytic therapist, my goal is to help such children repair those early vulnerabilities.
Anxiety, worry and self-doubt are perhaps the most common and widespread challenges faced by children today. From every area of their lives, children face daunting pressures and demands. For those already anxious or vulnerable, these pressures maybe be overwhelming. Already primed for frustration or failure, such children may find navigating key developmental transitions - from childhood to grade school, for example, or from pre-adolescence to the teen years - difficult if not impossible. Parents may have tried other interventions or therapies; but often with little or no success. What's a concerned parent to do?

I treat a variety of issues from a psychoanalytic perspective.
Maybe you're reading this because you're depressed, anxious or struggling with relationships. Maybe you can't explain your pain? You may be experiencing common problems that lead people towards therapy. Many people feel skeptical when it comes to seeking therapy and wonder if it can help. Therapy, at its best, is tailored to your specific needs so you can find a path to a more content and fulfilled life. Whether you know exactly what you would like to work on or you just have a vague feeling that things are not ok, therapy can help.

I trained at the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis and earned my Doctor of Psychoanalytic Studies degree at the Parkmore Institute.
Many are in search of a therapist because they have been feeling stuck, disempowered, or conflicted and would benefit from specialized support to gain greater psychological freedom and good health. To this end, we can explore your experience and expectations to foster insight and greater awareness of your needs. I offer a range of psychotherapeutic approaches to promote coping and make meaning out of problematic patterns, losses, trauma, depression, anxiety, stress and difficulty in relationships. Unique to your needs, I offer a co-created therapeutic space to facilitate change; trust, communication, attachment, growth and healing.

I have been the president of several psychoanalytic organizations, and founder of the Noir Institute for psychoanalytic study and practice.
Ever wonder if you are making the right choices in life? Does it feel like all the choices are wrong? Are you having difficulties with relationships, job or career? Should you take a risk on something new? In my 20+ years as a psychologist I have found that making the right choice is not the issue, but rather understanding how and why we make choices. Becoming aware of how we think and why we act is what leads to a more satisfying and engaged life. Knowing oneself and exploring our unconscious can open potentials for emotional growth, creativity, and self-empowerment.

I hold an MSW from New York University and completed my psychoanalytic training at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies in New York City.
Some of our problems may seem evident to us, easy to think and talk about. Others may have remained stubbornly elusive, sometimes for years, sometimes for as long as we can remember. Overcoming these problems can be exceedingly difficult. Psychotherapy proceeds on the understanding that insight into these problems can be developed in dialogue with another. Psychotherapists are essentially attuned, nonjudgmental, basically optimistic and trustworthy consultants.

I incorporate CBT, psychoanalytic, and positive psychological techniques.
I want to help you gain a greater sense of control over difficult thoughts and feelings. Clients often begin therapy requesting concrete tools to walk away with from each session. This is something I offer through through my enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approach, with a dual focus on techniques for altering unhealthy thoughts and behavior, and for improving insight, awareness, and mindfulness. I have a long track record of creating powerful results for my clients.

I use psychoanalytic / psychotherapy techniques and interventions.
If you're affected by daily stresses of life, significant issues related to depression, anxiety or interpersonal relationships, I am a New York licensed psychologist and certified psychoanalyst that will help you resolve these problems. Clients gain insight into what's troubling them so that they can manage their issues more effectively. I work in an intimate setting, situated in a comfortable environment overlooking a private garden. It is a safe and confidential space. I work with people who are having difficulty developing and or maintaining significant relationships, experiencing depression, anxiety, low self esteem, feelings of being unlovable, or "just getting by" rather than thriving.

Sometimes people seek therapy because of painful situations, or they're unclear about which path to take. Sometimes they're trying to overcome the effects of a difficult childhood. And sometimes they have a more biological problem - ADD, depression, mood swings - and want to lead a rich and satisfying life despite these problems. I will help you to figure out the source of your problems, and find solutions. For twenty-four years I've worked with a wide range of patients with a variety of issues. I've taught Psychology at Smith College, and graduate students and candidates at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center.

With more than 10 years experience, I offer an integrated approach of contemplative psychotherapy and psychoanalytic thought.
Psychotherapy is a practice of deep listening and understanding. I help people develop insight into their troubles and look into habitual patterns that may create obstacles to their life goals. Together, we identify these patterns, explore feelings, and put effective coping skills into practice. When working with children, my approach invites the family in. Parent coaching, which involves a neurobiological understanding, and psychodynamic insight are integral. Through play therapy I help children discover ways to communicate their experience. The purpose is to establish a connection that encourages growth and the sense that children have a positive impact in their world.

My clinical work is strongly informed by my training in psychoanalytic therapy and psychoanalysis.
I believe meaningful change occurs when client and psychotherapist co-create a relational space that invites curiosity, empathy, and introspection. To transform psychic pain, we often have to look inward at our ways of thinking, feeling, and relating (to self and others). I strive to facilitate this process in the context of a warm therapeutic relationship where those with whom I’m working feel safe & empowered. Through empathic listening, skilled interpretation, and embodied attunement to the "here and now" interactive process, I can help resolve debilitating symptoms and impart greater meaning to your experiences / relationships.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy offers deep empathic understanding and useful insights that can be grounding and freeing.
The enormous number of stressors we face daily are intense these days: politics, the economy, the climate, global unrest, overwork, isolation, disconnection. All of this is tremendously difficult to manage on one's own. Anxiety, anger, depression, resentment, boredom; sadness, rage, exhaustion, denial. If you're struggling with any of this - or any other states that often bring people to therapy, like emptiness, grief, feeling lost or overwhelmed, relationship issues, lack of direction - it's worth investing the time and effort to get help, get grounded, and find a better path forward.

I believe that supporting an individual’s emotional well-being is the primary force for positive growth. In therapy clients can safely explore thoughts and feelings in a way that creates space to see our patterns more clearly. I value the relationship and believe it is the foundation for the working through process to happiness and uncovering a sense of purpose and meaning in life. My understanding of therapy primarily draws from psychoanalytic perspectives but I also incorporate mindfulness and contemporary views on trauma in my work. Individuals might need different approaches and I do my best to meet you where you are at.

I work integratively to tailor treatment to your needs, drawing from psychoanalytic, existential, and more behavioral approaches (DBT, CBT).
If you are seeking therapy at this point in your life, you may be feeling that your usual way of coping isn't working anymore. This may lead to you feeling alienated and lonely, frustrated and angry, hopeless, confused, striving for perfection, or otherwise stuck. It may simply be that your usual way of being is made up of out-of-date strategies - what was once adaptive is now causing you stress and unnecessary suffering. Let me help you learn how to start relaxing the struggle. Our work together will provide an opportunity for self-knowledge, tolerance for difficult emotions, and acceptance of your own humanity.

To me, a psychoanalytic approach means a deeper way of listening and relating.
My concept of therapy is thinking together with someone about their experiences and their relationships in a compassionate and respectful environment. You can expect our work together to uncover what’s missing in the ways you know and understand yourself. My training is in psychoanalysis, which engages with what is not yet known in the unconscious and brings you to a deeper understanding of your felt experience. Having a witness to support putting language to your process is a powerful part of healing. “The words are purposes. The words are maps.” -Adrienne Rich
