I work primarily with adolescents, children, and young adults who have had very difficult experiences and need a safe, playful, and steady partner to explore the impact of these events on their lives. As an out queer clinician I also work regularly with LGBTQIA+ clients who seek a therapist aware of the complexity of those identities in the world, as well as with parents looking to better develop skills to support trans or queer-identified children. I recognize racism and white supremacy as forms of social oppression that provoke traumatic responses and work accordingly with clients who have been harmed by these systems.

Relationships are great when everything is easy, but when things are challenging, that can be really hard - as you may know. The couples I work with may wonder why they keep having the same fights, or why they and/or their partner keep getting triggered, or why it can be so hard to understand one another. And, sometimes, one or both partners wonder what happened to their sex life and what can they do about it.

I believe the therapist-client relationship relies on mutual trust which is earned, not given. Having clear and measurable goals provides a strong foundation and accountability for our time together. With mutual trust and clear goals, I will help you build bridges between the unrealistic ideal self and the authentic self. Together we will explore and challenge ‘automatic’ routines and responses, develop discomfort tolerance and practice self-compassion. I offer radical acceptance, self-efficacy, compassion, empathy, trust, pushback, and validation.

For those who identify as lgbtq+, I am one of few gay male psychoanalysts in NYC.
At times life is marked by confusion, uncertainty, and suffering, so it's no surprise that people seek out psychotherapy. The approach we will work with is psychoanalytic in nature—meaning, the focus is on the role of your unconscious.

Challenging the roles society has placed on us can be really difficult, but when we break through these barriers to create our own identities, life can feel so meaningful. My passion is working with individuals and couples, especially people of colour, men, and the LGBTQ community, to re-define themselves into who they truly want to be. By helping individuals be their truest selves in relationships, I also help couples create a more balanced partnership.

This is an in person practice. Individual and group and sessions are held in my West Chelsea office. The aim of treatment is for you to tell the emotional story of your life. As we engage in therapy together you increase the ability to tolerate a wider range of feelings and perspectives. This resolves conflict avoidant behaviors. We free you from repetitive patterns and lead you towards what Yeats called a “clearer, fiercer life.” One that is distinctively, decidedly yours.

All of us struggle with barriers that inhibit our ability to expand in the world of work or relationships, experience vitality and creativity. These barriers are experienced as symptoms, for example: anxiety, depression, anger, dissociation, low self-esteem and motivation, negative thinking, interpersonal difficulties and self-defeating patterns. I have over 20 years of clinical experience and a kind, patient and professional demeanor. With incisive, cogent exploration, support and some humor, I can help you come to better terms with and move beyond barriers.

I work with individuals who on the outside look like they have it altogether and on the inside would actually like to feel that way. You may find yourself in a situation, a job, or a relationship you’ve worked really hard to create, but instead of feeling happy and energized about where you are, you find yourself feeling anxious, exhausted and frustrated.

I believe that, for many of us, psychotherapy is a process of self-discovery that can help us better understand ourselves, connect our inner world with our external environment and to those around us, and reconcile conflicting parts of ourselves. It can lead to feeling more alive, authentic, open to the world, fulfilled and aware. It requires a willingness to explore personal histories, question long-held beliefs, examine behaviors that work against us, and to accept that change is possible. I work with adults and young adults of various social, economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds and gender identities and gender expressions.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
