In the words of Carl Jung ""There's no coming to consciousness without pain." Entering psychotherapy is, literally, life saving. Many of us function "in the dark" for years, going through the motions of life without any deeper sense of meaning. This absence of meaning results in an "unlived life" of emotional distress and a variety of symptoms. Many continue to suffer because they fear another sort of pain...that involved with the process of getting to truly know oneself. The difference is that the pain involved with coming to consciousness is simply part of the journey, not the destination.

I have worked with many couples, adolescents, and adults.
I'm passionate about helping couples and individuals during this challenging time. Couples may find that their communication has gotten off track. You may be feeling overwhelmed, angry, stuck, scared, or lost. Simply managing emotions can become a full-time job, and yet the problems often persist despite our best efforts to feel better. Fortunately, you have taken a vital step by seeking out a dedicated, compassionate therapist. My clients have been varied: young men stifled by shame, seniors navigating health scares, a couple feeling overwhelmed by the challenges of a newborn, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

You experience enduring patterns of thinking, feeling, behaving, and relating as significant sources of problems and emotional pain. Pieces of your identity – gender, sexuality, spirituality, ethnicity – seem inherently conflicted. You walk the world with unique gifts and sensibilities, yet in times of distress, you find yourself fleeing, fighting, appeasing, or beating yourself up. You've searched far and wide for a therapist who specializes in people with exactly your problem and met nothing but disappointment. The truth is that there is no person with exactly your problem, but you don't have to be alone.

Depression and anxiety hold us back from reaching our potential. So many factors in our daily lives work to develop and reinforce those negative emotions over time. They leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and unfulfilled. In order to cope, we often develop behaviors that we know aren’t good for us but feel impossible to stop. You try to make things better, but moments of change and growth are fleeting. You’re ready to create lasting change and free yourself from what’s holding you back. You deserve to experience a satisfying life filled with joy and happiness!

Managing complex emotions and past traumas can be challenging, especially when trying to balance the difficulties of everyday life. It can often feel overwhelming to try to address these feelings on your own, though not addressing them can often be even more painful. In my practice, I seek to help my clients work through their challenges and become more aware of their patterns and thought processes. I provide clients with an empathetic and affirming space that allows them to feel comfortable tackling their issues, yet I also aim to challenge my clients to look beyond the obvious and recognize damaging behaviors.

I have been teaching doctoral students how to be effective clinicians for many years.
I'm a clinical psychologist with almost 30 years experience. I work with adults in individual and couple/marital therapy. Psychotherapy is an interactive process. Together we'll address current problems and examine the underlying causes. You'll probably feel better relatively quickly, but change takes time, and its best to give yourself a chance to make lasting changes. My style is interactive and exploratory. website: ronaviram.com

Life is inherently unpredictable. How do we navigate unforseen obstacles when they arise? How do we make sense of and begin to process the unfathomable when we are blindsided by it? And how can we overcome our own stuck points so that we can live more purposeful, happier lives given complex issues that may present themselves? You may be experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, and/or other challenges along the way. I offer a safe and non-judgmental space to help you process, learn, and overcome.

I have seen many of my patients for a number of years, which is an indication that they feel they are making continual progress.
When seeing a new patient I am always mindful of the value of listening and communication. I am always mindful of ways of interpreting deeper understanding, but it begins with the building of a relationship between the two people in the room. By allowing this to develop I am able to assist in finding resolutions to symptoms and patterns that are emotionally painful and stubbornly have not gone away. My ideal client is one who is at least curious about making a commitment to change. I will attempt to do my part. I do use video and teletherapy for new and established patients.

I believe in the individual's unique experience. Psychological theories can help us understand ourselves up to a certain point, but ultimately we have to write our own story. I try to be as open minded as possible and not to presume anything about my clients. I believe in diversity of thought, feelings and experience and encourage my clients to embrace their uniqueness rather than pressure themselves to conform. I try to provide a nonjudgmental environment in which clients can explore their struggles, make changes or accept themselves for who they are.

I am so glad you found my profile. Starting therapy takes courage and finding the right therapist can feel daunting. Believe it or not, before I was a therapist I was a plumber. That work still informs how I approach work with patients. We can't just address what is on the surface. We have to also understand what blocks pathways to meaningful behavioral change. Patients who reach out are often, like me, members of the queer community. Queer folks often navigate unique challenges to our core identities, which can be hard to explore with therapists whose backgrounds are uncertain. I am openly queer and affirming in my work.

I speak French, Italian, Spanish, Ger man, and some Hebrew.
Suffering is an integral part of life, the same way manure is an integral part of the farmer's life. As a wise farmer learns to use manure as a fertilizer, I can assist you in understanding and using your suffering wisely, and learning to profit from it. I am silent when need be, yet I am also very willing to respond to your questions and to dialogue with you in a very direct way when necessary.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
