At the heart of my practice lies the intersection of science and art, imbued with humor, care, and creativity. Perhaps you find yourself carrying a heavy weight on your shoulder or navigating your days with a tightness in your chest and lack of energy. It’s possible you’ve been prioritizing others’ needs and neglecting your own, or realizing you don’t recognize the script guiding your life. You might be carrying the burden of guilt and shame or finding that your relationships are not what you want them to be.

Hi, I’m Lori. Counseling can be a difficult choice, but also a brave choice! I am available evenings and weekends to make it as easy and convenient as possible. I work with adults of all ages dealing with a range of issues related to anxiety, depression, life transitions, college stressors, relationships, parenting, substance abuse and addiction. I believe that counseling provides a safe space that allows us to explore our feelings and identify a path of growth and change.

My main goal as a therapist is to provide an emotionally safe and therapeutic atmosphere for my clients. I’ve worked with individuals across the life span and have found that my work has been most impactful with people aged preteen through young adulthood. This time is full of so much change - internally and externally. Initiating therapy can be hard. With a mixture of empathy, support, and reflection, solutions will be developed together, helping to give you a life that is more fulfilled.

Hello, Thank you for viewing my profile and considering me as a possible resource to meet your psychotherapeutic needs. At times it can be a struggle to find the right words to express our thoughts, challenges, needs, and wishes. This can lead us to feel stuck, misunderstood, or overwhelmed. In these instances we may find ourselves using maladaptive coping tools to make it through, which can lead to anxiety, depression or simply feeling stressed and unbalanced. If you are looking to find the right words, clarity, and tools to overcome these moments and achieve the balance that is right for you then we may be a great match.

Feeling anxious all the time is such a crippling feeling and can feel like there is no escaping it. Just when one anxious thought starts to go away, another one shows up and takes its place. It can feel like an endless cycle of racing thoughts, worry, and fear about anything and everything. It’s hard to know when the anxiety will be over especially living in an anxiety-inducing world that is constantly changing which in turn leads to more anxiety. If this sounds like you, you're not alone!

Prior to entering private practice, I worked for over 20 years in outpatient and inpatient mental health settings providing therapy to a diverse population. I specialize in working with the LGBTQIA+ community, and often work with clients on exploring their identity. In particular, working with clients who have experienced trauma, including sexual abuse, and how this intersects with the way they see themselves, and their overall sense of self-worth. I also have over 15 years experience working with those suffering from depression, anxiety and severe mental illness.

Most people contact me overwhelmed by feelings, symptoms or in a life crisis. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) we will explore your thoughts, feelings and behavior and identify those that are not rational, but whose messages control how you feel and behave By learning more rational ways of thinking, you will be in control of the messages you give yourself, not the ones you have been barely conscious of and often come from negative past experiences. Behavior is also explored. Do you repeat the same actions that create problems at work, in relationships? You can change that too, through thinking differently.

Have you been feeling anxious, depressed, isolated, stressed? Do you repeatedly engage in behaviors or relationships that don't help and may be harmful and find you can't stop? Whether these feelings & behaviors have been present for a long time or seemed to develop suddenly, it can be hard to figure out the cause or how to find relief. Sometimes distress is caused by prior trauma or by the coping skills developed early in life that are no longer effective or helpful. Personal growth, relief from emotional pain and discomfort, better relationships, and living a more fulfilled life are all possible.

Your life is in transition, you are trying to hold it together on the outside, while inside you are falling apart. You feel like you have to live up to someone else's expectations or ideals and no matter what you do, it feels like you are failing. You feel added pressures to be everything to everyone: a perfect partner, parent, friend, or employee, and this pressure can feel daunting.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
