I have been working remotely since the pandemic. I have not observed a significant difference in the efficacy of treatment delivered in this format and the advantages are many. I am most effective in helping those struggling with depression, anxiety, an inability to prosper, find happiness or enjoy satisfying relationships with others. I work well with men and wo men of all ages and adolescents. For those who wish to be understood and understand themselves I am a good choice. It is the very act of making oneself known to others that is therapeutic. In so doing we become known to ourselves as well.

One of my favorite quotes "Life is not what it's supposed to be. It's what it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference", as Virginia Satir said. My job is to help people explore their emotions, thoughts, choices, and patterns. I work with adolescents and adults who struggle with managing their emotions, who are hurting and confused. I will work with you to find a skills-based solution to get unstuck. I will help you learn techniques and to develop an awareness of why things are this way for you and how to begin to change things.

People seek therapy when their Plan A breaks down. We each have a Plan A: it's everything we learn as kids about life and how to cope with it. We learn it mainly from our families and mainly unconsciously, and it works well enough for a while. But eventually we move out into a larger emotional world and that's when Plan A starts to fail. Anxiety, depression, addictions and relationship problems are symptoms of this failure. Sure, we want relief from these symptoms. But what we really need is a healthier Plan B. My job is to help you create one.

My specialty includes helping clients build healthier relationships by promoting skills to become better listeners and managers of their own anger and frustration.
Do you suffer with anxiety, depression, or problems communicating effectively with your partner or loved one? Feel easily frustrated or confused? Have problems handling or expressing your anger? These are some of the issues I enjoy helping clients to resolve in the comfort and privacy of therapy. My goal is to help you identify and overcome the unhealthy patterns of behavior that negatively impact your life. I can help you learn to replace negative behaviors with more effective coping and communication styles, and at the same time increase your self-esteem.

Congratulations on taking this first step in seeking support and making change. Perhaps you’re fully on board with the idea of talking to someone or maybe you’re more undecided- but either way-welcome! My name is Michael and I’m a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist with experience working in an inpatient acute psychiatric setting as well as being a supervisor and therapist in an adolescent and adult mental health clinic. When it comes to treatment, I believe in focusing on the underlying cause and not solely on the presenting symptom, which allows me to work to get to the root of the behaviors being displayed.

I know that reaching out can be difficult for many reasons but I hope that you are able to take that leap of faith and that we are able to connect.
Sometimes life can feel like a rollercoaster as we go through ups and downs. During these times it can be difficult to reach out for help as intrusive thoughts lead us to feel alone, anxious, sad, or afraid. We will work together to explore these thoughts and feelings as well as set and climb towards goals at your pace.

I am also a male therapist, a rarity in my location.
I am best able to assist those who struggle with competitive relationships, and feelings of being on the losing side in their interactions with those they love. I have seen couples, individuals, and entire families struggling with attempts to force one another to 'win' arguments, only to find that they never seem to go away fully. Many times, other issues such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sexual dysfunction or substance abuse becomes the main issue which families show to others the competitive nature which occurs within the family system, and are most concerned when they call for an initial session.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
