Hello! I'm Mary, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Hempstead, New York, and working with clients statewide via telehealth. Life can be challenging sometimes. In my work, I try to provide a safe space where those challenges can be explored, and new possibilities can be discovered. I work collaboratively with you to help you re-discover your strengths and to use these to help you deal more effectively with your struggles. I have found that my style and approach are a good fit for adults and seniors who are experiencing life transitions and are having difficulty coping with grief and loss.

In my years as a clinician one thing has always remained a constant, and that is difficulty with transitions and change, which life abundantly throws at us. Regardless of the situation, change or transition is often the cause of unsettling feelings that lead one to engage with a therapist. That being said, many people are more comfortable and able to successfully maneuver adjustments in their daily routine, in their family structure, home life, work, relationships, etc. Others however, may struggle with developing or utilizing ways of coping with such change.

Update: Therapist Intern Kaitlynn Shultz has joined my practice and is available. Our minds and bodies are powerful forces, which are wholly connected. Environmental factors, as well as belief and value systems are deeply rooted in how we present ourselves physically and emotionally. Painful life events can fracture the mind/body connection for the sake of survival. Adults may experience anxious and depressive thoughts. Relationships may see increased tension and/or codependent traits. Healing from therapeutic intervention is recognizing unhelpful “parts” and bringing love, appreciation and competency to your internal world.

Reaching out is often the toughest step and it is very important (and can be rewarding) to find the right fit! Each individual has their own unique story and experiences and therefore deserving of an individualized approach to therapy. The therapeutic relationship should foster one's personal journey to self exploration and growth. My goal is to help you find your best fit and support you in your personal growth, healing, and self-empowering journey. My approach is often described as supportive, warm, empowering, challenging (when you need it), and humorous.

My ideal client Is one who is willing to put in the work. Whether it is someone who is looking to work on a relationship, past personal trauma, or personal growth, I like to work with those who are willing to dig deep and work with me to address those areas that they struggle with on a day-to-day basis. However, the client also has to understand the therapy is not a quick fix but more of a process that may take time before they achieve whatever goal that they desire to reach with me. In the end, I hope to help them address whatever needs they bring to the table, and to eventually achieve whatever their target goals are.

Talking about sex can be a liberating and empowering experience. You might be experiencing a decrease in sexual desire, struggling with sexual function, or wanting to explore what sexuality looks like for you. These topics and the entire spectrum of sexual concerns and questions are valid and deserve to be heard. Many folks avoid addressing sexual wellness concerns because of the shame, fear, and anxiety they feel around sex and their bodies. Working towards more fulfilling sexual connections with ourselves and others can spark deep reflection and growth in our lives. I work best with individuals who are eager to explore and learn.

Are the stressors of day to day life taking their toll on you? Is a chronic state of anxiety or depression affecting your life satisfaction? Do you want to be better understood and better understand your partner, but don't know how? Are intimacy issues creating distance and conflict? Everyone needs help sometimes. When we are feeling isolated or unseen, our day to day life feels emptier and our mental and physical health pay the price.

I view mental health challenges as stemming from lived experiences. Family dynamics, traumas, and other events impact our ability to regulate emotions, know and accept ourselves, trust others, and form intimate and gratifying relationships. I believe both the body and mind are central components of therapeutic growth and healing. A main focus in my work has been the body-mind relationship in recovery from sexual violence, and I have also worked extensively with university students challenged by multicultural and diversity issues, and associated feelings of anxiety and depression.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
