Talking to someone about a problem can be a difficult thing to do, especially when that someone is new. Thus, my goal as a clinician is to foster a relationship that will allow you to be comfortable, develop clear objectives, and ultimately address root problems that are causing negative life experiences. Since past and/or current behavior can serve as major drivers for our feelings, my theoretical approach emphasizes cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and systems theory techniques depending on the presenting problem.

I use an eclectic approach with a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic background to treat adolescents and adults.
You may be thinking, “I just don’t feel like myself.” but don’t know where to start to feel better. Did you imagine your life would be at a different place by now? Sometimes as great as family and friends are, they may not truly understand and an outside unbiased perspective is helpful. I know that it can be hard to reach out for help, let alone find a therapist who is right for you. I provide my clients with a warm, supportive, non-judgmental space to help empower you and give you the coping skills needed to live the life you deserve.

With substantial postdoctoral training, I use many modalities, including cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic and somatic.
Put simply, I'd like to help you and/or your family member(s), feel less worried, less sad, and, in general, less distressed. With over 40 years of experience, I feel that I've been able to provide that to many hundreds of people with whom I've worked. Whether it's your child or teen who is suffering (I work with all manner of child and adolescent issues, including ADHD, academic underachievement, oppositional defiance, anxiety, depression and limitations in social skills) or whether it's you, your relationship or your family that is troubled, I have the experience to help resolve issues.

As a therapist who believes there is not just "one way" to do treatment, I use an integrative approach to helping my patients. I am a practitioner with a unique perspective having a background ranging from business to mental health. Counseling and psychotherapy are 'teamwork' approaches to problem solving that should be as unique as the person seeking help.

We long to be loved and accepted for the person we truly are. There is no better opportunity than our love relationship for us to be fully ourselves. Ironically, since our partner is so central to our life, his or her validation becomes critical and we are inclined to hide our true self. We become guarded from the most important person in our lives. The intimacy and willingness to know and be known that made the beginning of love so passionate becomes simply functional. It is replaced with feelings of apprehension. Over time we move from a passionate relationship to one that is quietly cautious. That's when trouble looms.

Sometimes all that stands in the way of your happiness and peace of mind is the way you think about things. It's remarkable how our own thoughts can work against us creating anxiety, depression and an overall feeling of being trapped or stuck. The happiness that you truly want and deserve is actually within your control! Whether it's getting rid of your fears, understanding why you feel sad, finally having that healthy relationship you have been yearning for, reducing stress, finding balance, or finally being able to answer the question "what will make me happy?".

You feel stressed out all the time. You have managed to keep everything together for years but you feel like you are barely holding on. You are exhausted all the time and often think you just can't do it anymore. On the outside, it seems like you have it all it. You’re accomplished, driven, and dependable. But on the inside, you never feel good enough and the voice in your head often reminds you of all the ways you’re falling short. You're tired of giving so much to everyone else while you continue to come last on your list. Not anymore. Now is the time to prioritize yourself and make a positive change.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” (Henry Stanley Haskins). Your inner strengths can be fostered and expanded by working together in a supportive environment, so you'll feel a greater sense of control over your concerns rather than a sense that your concerns control you.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
