As a counselor based in humanistic and relational cultural theory, I believe you are the person who knows yourself best. Throughout life, circumstances leading to disruptions in well-being can produce self-doubt, a negative view of self, and low self-worth. Even through these times, each person still has autonomy and the ability to make effective decisions that fit in accordance with their lives. One of my goals is to expand self-awareness so you can live in a more purposeful way that aligns with your values.

Hello everyone, please welcome and allow me to first begin in thanking you. The choice to start therapy isn’t always easy, sometimes it is the most difficult thing to do is to even consider it, then admit you want/need it before even taking the steps to start, but you are not alone on this journey. Perhaps there has been times that you have found yourself feeling stressed, down, lacking confidence, or stuck in a pattern that no longer serves you. Perhaps you’re ready to take steps toward changes but feel stuck or unsure where to start. Or even feeling lost in your relationships in life or even disconnected from them.

I am a bilingual Spanish-speaking clinical social worker and focus on anxiety and relational difficulties, serving adults, teens and families.
Our happiness and well-being are inextricably linked to our relationships - the ones we have, the ones we've lost, the ones we wish we had. Even as we confront stress and anxiety that originates from outside of relationships- due to trauma or unexpected life events- the quality of our relationships deeply affects our ability to cope and recover.

I am relational and collaborative with clients.
I believe in everyone's inherent value and seek to guide individuals through the process of reconnecting to their true essence and worth. Together we would explore presenting challenges to eventually get to the origin of the pain that may be keeping you stuck or blocked. I work somatically using Sensorimotor Psychotherapy approach in order to gently guide the body and mind back into harmony as so often trauma and life experiences can separate or fracture the two, leaving us feeling disconnected from ourselves and others.

Working with LGBTQ/GNC clients, especially clients of color, is what I've always been passionate about. As a queer, trans-masculine, Black clinician, I am dedicated to not only working with the communities that mirror my own marginalized identities, but also those who fall within, between, and among populations facing oppression and discrimination. Clients are often in the throes of identify formation, large life changes, processing trauma, and navigating difficult relational dynamics, leading to the desire to be seen and heard. To be human is to experience pain, but within that pain is a vast space to learn, process, and heal.

I work with clients of all ages across a wide spectrum of symptoms and experiences including anxiety and depression, identity exploration, relational difficulties, and life transitions. Much of my work has been focused within the LGBTQ+ community, including identity exploration and expression. Through this work I've learned that healing and growth require playing to our strengths while honoring our intersecting identities. I help clients recognize what they themselves have to offer, while simultaneously supporting the clarification of their identities, goals, and abilities to navigate relationships.

I’m Jordan Chapman and I’m a relational psychotherapist, which basically means that I focus on building an honest and safe relationship with each of my clients. We’ll work to understand how any of the thoughts and feelings that come up between us can improve how you understand yourself and how you relate to other people. I also pay attention to past experiences because those usually inform some aspect of how you understand yourself, and/or any problem you might be experiencing now. I love therapy because it can make a real difference in how you live your life, which extends to how you feel, day-in and day out.

Taking the initial steps to begin psychotherapy can be intimidating but the process of therapy has the potential to transform your life. Survival skills that may have helped us in the past may have become an obstacle to thriving in the present. This may contribute to feeling stuck in painful relationships, unrewarding jobs and struggling with depression and anxiety.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
