My clients often come to me with a history of trauma or adversity, and a strong desire to process and understand how their past has shaped them to be the person they are today. They’re motivated, insightful, eager to grow, and have a strong desire to learn the skills necessary to have healthier relationships, better communication, and improved confidence. Through our work together, we begin to understand and develop the tools necessary to manage anxiety and depressive symptoms that can at times be a barrier for further growth.

With over a decade of clinical experience, my therapeutic approach is deeply rooted in helping individuals foster self-reflection & emotional expression. I guide clients through life transitions and help them process a diverse range of emotions, thoughts, traumas, and complex relationships that may cause distress. For instance, I assist clients in processing feelings such as worry, shame, guilt, fear, anger, & sadness, while also facilitating acceptance, trust, hope, forgiveness, accountability, and a sense of enoughness. My practice is also trauma-informed, ensuring that the impacts of past traumas are validated & safety is formed.

I am a licensed clinical social worker who believes in the power of understanding ones own story. I do not believe that you are “broken,” or that you need “fixing.” I use a combination of mindfulness, strength-based, and compassion-focused approaches to empower my clients to re-claim parts of their story and achieve self-acceptance. I strive to help clients interpret past experiences and to unburden emotional pain, which can improve your relationships, help you achieve your goals, and improve your overall quality of life.

I have always been curious to understand this strange, sometimes bewildering journey of being human. After over 20 years in the theater as an actor, director, and teacher, my own journey eventually led me to the disciplines of social work and psychotherapy. I believe that no human story can be summed up in a label or a diagnosis; like any compelling character, our lives are nuanced and layered, shaped by a web of intersecting experiences along personal, social, environmental, and historical dimensions. It can be lot to make sense of on our own.

Life challenges are a normal part of the human experience. Though personal and often transformative, they can also be stressful. Psychotherapy can provide support and help you navigate these changes more effectively. I value the creation and maintenance of a strong therapeutic relationship, assisting clients in discovering and honing their strengths, setting meaningful goals, and pursuing a path to wellness. It is crucial to have a mindful and empathetic listener who offers patience and understanding. This is the responsibility I commit to if you choose to embark on this journey with me.

I warmly welcome individuals seeking culturally inclusive, strengths-based therapy. Whether it's depression, anxiety, trauma, or life transitions, I'm here to empower your healing journey. As a first-generation American, I understand how culture, family dynamics, and intergenerational factors impact stress. Growing up in a family shaped by the Cambodian genocide's trauma, I deeply grasp culture, identity, and mental health's intricate interplay. My experiences fuel my dedication to helping individuals navigate trauma, acculturation, and resilience.

Studies consistently show that the most important part of effective therapy is a strong relationship between therapist and client. When you come to see me, establishing a supportive bond where you feel safe enough to be yourself and to take risks is my first priority. Together we will explore how different parts of you interact with one another, noticing and appreciating your resiliency, as well as the areas of pain and hurt. We will work together to create more internal harmony, improving relationships with others by starting with your relationship with yourself.

I work with a variety of people whose active, creative lives have been interrupted by depression, mania, anxiety, mourning, and trauma. Psychotherapy with me is a process of guided expression. Thoughts and feelings, dreams and fantasies, desires and fears are given voice – loud, clear, and without judgment. The experience of formulating authentic verbal and emotional expressions can be transformative in and of itself. Also, as patterns in your way of being become clear, you can begin to consider alternatives, find courage to change, and experience what is commonly known as freedom.

I am passionate about working with young people and members of the LGBTQ+ community. As a former educator, I have extensive experience working with youth, and specialize in issues related to adolescence, young adulthood, coming out, queer identities, perfectionism, self-image, and learning disabilities. My work seeks to work with what is thought and what is felt, integrating cognitive and somatic experiences. Also, the handsome fella in the pic is Hud, our rescue pup. He's generally happier than he looks in the picture, I promise.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
