You deserve to be seen, heard, accepted, and respected. My goal is to hold a safe space — free of judgement — for clients to express/process thoughts, feelings, and experiences. An integral part of my role is to provide guidance and support as you explore root causes influencing present circumstances, experience healing, and release any mental, physical, and/or emotional blockages that may be interfering with living a life that feels/is healthy, balanced, and fulfilled. My approach is warm, pragmatic, and holistic. I strive to create strategies to meet your needs in ways that are realistic and meaningful for you.

I'm glad you're here. You've probably read a lot of profiles before finding mine so I will get right to it; I can help. Therapy not just a place to talk; it's a place to land, recover, laugh, and definitely cry (that's good!). I welcome all, however my passion lies with supporting women and lgbt+ individuals through the challenges and traumas of life however new or old those may be. Things feel almost unrecognizable these days and so many of us are full of anxiety and fear about what could be or be taken away. Whether you are dealing with a long term concern or just need help working through recent things, I'm here to help.

Have you been contemplating seeing a therapist but are not sure it is for you or would be helpful? There are many reasons a person may seek therapy. People usually seek therapy because they are unhappy or dissatisfied with their life and want or need change. Mental health issues, addictions to chemicals or unhealthy lifestyles, family or relationship issues or a general discontent with your life and the choices that are not working anymore are some of the reasons to seek treatment. Therapy is also a perfect addition to a wellness or self improvement and/or self exploration practice.

My clients want to work with me to achieve their goals and resolve any conflict they are experiencing in their life. I enjoy working with clients experiencing depression and anxiety, OCD, addictive behaviors, eating disorders (specialize), difficult life experiences, trauma, ASD, medically compromised family issues, chronic mental health issues. I truly enjoy helping my clients with grief and loss so that they can move on from grief while holding onto their loved ones/or things. I like family involvement or family work because I look at barriers as a family of origin issue and a family goal, not just the “identified patient”.

In life, we encounter many situations that seem to push us to our limits, or beyond. Some of these arise from within, others, from our surroundings. When these situations become intolerable, and nothing we’ve tried has worked, frustration, or even despair, may set in. At this point, we can give in or give up, or we can seek help and renewed hope. Whether you have been struggling mightily and at length, or mildly and briefly, I would be honored to meet you, to get to know you, to hear about what you’ve been going through, and to join with you in finding ways to make things better.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
