Life can be filled with challenging moments, situations and relationships. Such encounters can cause depression, anxiety and isolation. Life events may lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms that can evolve into self-destructive behaviors or relationships. I believe that healing and insight are stimulated by an interpersonal connection provided through a therapeutic alliance between the client and the therapist. I am trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, motivational interviewing, and multiple behavioral therapies. I have years of experience as a therapist working in a renowned outpatient substance abuse and mental health facility.

Life can be difficult at times. Relationship problems, issues at work, financial or parenting concerns, or feeling stuck or dissatisfied with our life circumstances, all can contribute to depression, anxiety or self-medicating and substance abuse. Whether it is getting rid of your fear, understanding why you are so sad, changing patterns of repeated painful relationships, or eliminatining self-destructive behaviors, the happiness you want and deserve is actually within your control. My approach is solution oriented. My style is collaborative. Patients like the fact that I do more than just listen. I raise questions, get them thinking, make suggestions, and engage actively with clients.

Life is complicated, and at times, it can feel overwhelming, lonely, or unfulfilling. Pain, grief, hopelessness, past traumas and difficult relationships can seem like too much to bear. While opening up to healing can be daunting and feel vulnerable, it is possible to open up new space to follow a more meaningful, connected path. My 10+ years of experience as a social worker and a clinician in NYC has lead me to believe that healing is possible for everyone. There is help. You don’t have to do it alone. As a therapist and a human I work from a place of openness, curiosity, compassion and introspection.

Glad you're here! I know that starting therapy can feel uncomfortable and overwhelming. I'm here to support you through the journey as we work together to process the challenges you are facing. No matter what you're going through, growth is possible and working through difficult feelings is part of the healing process. We may not be able to change other people or certain situations, but when we learn to understand and recognize our own patterns of behavior and emotions, they can be integrated into our lives as a means of growth and restoration. There is hope for a more peaceful, joyful, and authentic life!

Life can present challenges and difficulties working through a variety of transitions, decisions, relationships and traumas. Anxiety and depression is more prevalent now than ever. Whether it is a pattern of difficult relationships, self doubt and low self esteem, self medicating or a dissatisfaction with life circumstances, change and healing is possible. I believe that therapy is a collaborative experience and I work with each client to find a style that works best for them. I do more than just listen. I make observations, offer feedback and engage actively in sessions.

Hello and welcome! I'm Jennifer (she/her), a licensed clinical social worker in NY state. I graduated with my MSW in 2009 and since then have had a passion for working with people from all walks of life, who are ready for a change and to explore the things that may be holding them back from a more fulfilling life. I know how difficult life can get and the hopeless feeling that things will not get better. I value any person coming to therapy, and will offer respect, non-judgement and empathy while helping to instill more self-love and self-acceptance so that you can achieve your goals.

With over 15 years of counseling experience, I understand how difficult it may be to take that first step to enter therapy. I believe that people are capable of making life changes, sometimes needing support and guidance. Oftentimes, natural supports surround us, we are just unaware of how to tap into them.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
