I have practiced as a licensed therapist for 33 years. In addition to private practice, I have worked for mental health clinics and hospitals in Virginia, Indiana and Florida. Counseling/therapy is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the counselor, the client and the particular problems you are experiencing. Most persons seek counseling because they are experiencing problems which are causing pain or difficulties in their lives. It is an important decision to begin counseling. Counseling calls for the therapist's active efforts to understand the client's needs and the training to help.

As a solution-focused, mindfulness based cognitive/behavioral psychologist, I work by collaborating with you to identify problem areas and devise manageable strategies in the service of gradual, stepwise change. Our work looks at perceptions, thoughts, feelings and behavior and helps you alter and manage these. The fact that you are indeed able to make change becomes surprisingly clear to you, and it is done at a pace that feels workable.

In working with clients in psychotherapy, I find it useful first to sort out what's working in their lives from what's not. Then we look at what's not working; be it depression, anxiety, obsessive thinking, compulsive & addictive behavior, and extreme emotional reactions. All of these things can all serve as clues to help us identify and address hidden and unexpressed emotions and experiences. (In addition to treating adults, couples, and adolescents with the more standard therapy issues, I have extensive experience working with the full gamut of sexual topics.)

My practice invites you to come as you are and supports the journey home to your conscious, authentic self. My philosophies are positive, humanistic, and relationally-focused. I view humans holistically, as greater than the presence or sum of any part(s), with immense capacity to evolve beyond societally given ego identities. In this age of overzealous rationalism, I pledge the human heart feels most abundant when close and connected to others, not just in our partnerships or families, but within the collective consciousness and community in which we inhabit. The quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives.

"Get busy living, or get busy dying." If you haven't seen Shawshank Redemption, maybe you should. Maybe it's just me, but reading all the profiles here seems a bit tedious since we are all essentially saying the same things. As an Army Veteran and a solution-focused pragmatist, I like to cut to the chase. The bottom line is that we've ALL survived something in our lives and fall into one of two basic categories; either those who just don't die or those who come back to living. So which category are you in?

Feeling anxious all the time is such a crippling feeling and can feel like there is no escaping it. Just when one anxious thought starts to go away, another one shows up and takes its place. It can feel like an endless cycle of racing thoughts, worry, and fear about anything and everything. It’s hard to know when the anxiety will be over especially living in an anxiety-inducing world that is constantly changing which in turn leads to more anxiety. If this sounds like you, you're not alone!

I believe in our capacity to challenge and navigate away from unhealthy patterns. I support my clients in cultivating awareness and guide them in the healing process by drawing on innate strengths and resilience. I encourage clients to think of human beings as organisms, of body and of mind, that live in relationship with others and with our environment. As such, growth is our natural state. We are meant to grow, to act fluidly and adapt creatively throughout our lives and we suffer when that process is blocked or interrupted. However, our suffering can provide an opportunity to grow in new and exciting ways.

My mission is to be of help to people with a variety of goals: to live well, to create oneself, to understand more deeply and grow, and to cultivate the kinds of relationships that give life meaning and joy. A therapeutic partnership allows us to explore our patterns of living—of thinking, relating, communicating and behaving—and remake them to make life more satisfying.

I don't know what to say here and that is okay! With acceptance of this I can be present in curiosity and openness. Support of my clients begins here. I work with adolescents, young adults, adults, and couples to help them tap into their innate power to heal. Whether suffering from anxiety, heart-ache, depression, or deep trauma, behind all these symptoms exists a path to wholeness.

Infidelity Therapists
How does therapy for infidelity work?
A skilled infidelity therapist will provide a safe space for clients to communicate their feelings and concerns. The goal is to be completely honest about what led to the cheating and how it has affected the entire family to prevent it from recurring in the future. The therapist will help the clients work on rebuilding mutual trust and respect and developing better communication and conflict-resolution skills. If the goal is to remain a couple, clients will learn the “danger signs” for their specific relationship, and they will make a renewed commitment to be faithful.
How long does therapy for infidelity take?
Recovery from infidelity can take time, and it can vary from person to person. Generally, a therapist will want to see the clients at least once a week for around six months. Then the sessions can be arranged as needed, depending on the clients’ individual needs. While therapy may end or shift to an as-needed basis, it can take up to two years or more for some clients to fully recover from infidelity.
How does therapy help the partner who was cheated on?
When a client discovers their partner’s infidelity, their trust in the relationship and in the life they had together may be shattered. They often experience mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They don’t always want to stay in the relationship; they may feel ambivalent or may even want to leave. Therapy gives these clients a safe and healthy way to communicate all of their complicated emotions and concerns.
How does therapy help the partner who committed infidelity?
Infidelity often occurs when one or both partners’ emotional needs are not being met in the relationship. Therapy can help this client understand why they cheated and figure out how to address those unmet needs without resorting to infidelity in the future. This can lessen (but not entirely eliminate) the risk of repeated infidelity. Clients who cheat may also feel intense guilt about deceiving their partners, a sentiment that they can work through in therapy.
