When children, teens, or young adults show mood or behavioral changes or are going through a difficult period of transition, I can help. In the supportive setting of therapy, we can find constructive ways to understand feelings, manage problem behaviors, and communicate effectively with others. We can work in a more open, exploratory way or a more structured, goal-oriented way depending on your individual needs. I also collaborate with parents and outside professionals for more wholistic care.

I provide a warm and safe yet dynamic environment in which my clients express their innermost thoughts, gain insight, heal wounds and learn to live with more confidence, humor and joy. With 25 years of supervising and clinical experience with children, adults and couples, I am able to quickly attune and help clients feel at ease. I listen closely to my client’s thoughts, fears and dreams while helping them to make meaningful connections that strengthen their sense of self. While deep inner work generally takes time, some positive change can be anticipated rapidly.

The foundation of what makes working with me helpful, based on feedback from clients, is the personable nature of our conversations and our connection. I do not place myself on a higher footing than clients. Clients feel more at ease when they realize what they are working on is often the same as many others or things I have faced as a human. Clients know that I am accessible and committed to helping them strive towards the therapy or life goals they express are close to their values.

Are you a 20 or 30 something looking to make sense of the confusing changes life so often throws our way? Like a musician, I'll teach you how to 'read the 'chord changes' of your life story to create more interesting music. I specialize in working with artists and show how deepening your personal work expands your craft. Similarly, I love showing non-artists how their psychological work can increase and open up creativity they didn't realize was right in front of them!

As a Mental Health Advocate, I give speeches all over the nation to reduce stigma around Mental Health and encourage people to seek professional counseling, rather than “just talking to a friend about it or not talk about their problems at all”. As a Pakistani, Muslim immigrant who came to America with no knowledge of mental health, I understand how the confusion of identities, societal pressure to fit in and cultural differences can create emotional turmoil. Being in the mental health field for over 7 years, has allowed me to evolve as a Mental Health public speaker, who helps those with anxiety, depression and suicidal ideations,

We are all doing the best we can. But sometimes we realize that ways that we have previously used to cope with pain are no longer serving us. I work with people of all backgrounds who are in the process of learning to not judge themselves for being in pain, and in finding that freedom they can focus on what they need to function as their authentic selves.

Congratulations, you've taken the first step toward emotional well-being. Seeking help is a sign of strength. The pandemic took its toll on everyone. Some of us are only now recognizing the repercussions. I believe you'll find me empathic, curious and as a client once told me, "You care but keep it real." This is my second career; Journalism was my first. After years of working for a daily NYC paper I freelanced and raised my children. My life experience has enabled me to walk in many people's shoes.

Post pandemic earth is a tough place to live. My adolescent and adult clients alike have experienced increased anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, stress and anger; around loss, personal responsibilities, connection, and even just taking up space in a chaotic world. I approach therapy as way to take back parts of yourself that have been lost to loss and harm, while discovering emerging new parts. Though our discussions get heavy, I aim to smile and laugh with my clients through it all.

I practice in both NYC and Dobbs Ferry; in person and virtually (depending on the day we meet). I draw on my clinical, activist and legal backgrounds. I work primarily with individuals and couples and in that work, I draw on Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), for which I have been trained. I also draw on my extensive expertise in working with trauma and attachment. I incorporate sensory or body-based modalities as we go and when relevant, I create room to explore how our political culture impacts our felt sense of well-being. I am an active presence in the room and I use both humor and authentic connection.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
