Trauma and PTSD Therapists in Huntington, NY
Life stress? Relationship stress? Anxiety? Depression? There are various reasons why people choose to enter therapy. For some, the choice to see a therapist emerges slowly as they recognize their ability to function in life is either not where they want it to be or is deteriorating. Their coping mechanisms begin to breakdown as they become overwhelmed with negative emotions. Others may seek therapy from a more positive place and might be more interested in self-exploration. Our developmental and life experiences may include traumatic memories. As a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) I can help you to process and heal.

It can be hard to be a person in the world sometimes, especially if you have experienced loss, survived trauma or learned that something terrible will happen if you are not "perfect." Despite being “put together” on the outside, you find yourself spending so much energy trying to stay that way that you are burning out. You want to feel better but you are getting so overwhelmed that you shut down before you even know where to start. Many of my people have these concerns when we first meet but together we are able to practice actionable steps to access joy and security in the present and reconnect with hope for the future.

I specialize in working with adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, and trauma.
Trying to pick the right therapist can be a challenge. You can think of our first meeting more like a conversation, where we will go over what you are experiencing and how I can help you materialize your goals, values, and priorities. I offer a safe, comfortable, and compassionate space where we can explore how to reduce your suffering and help you get to where you want to be. For years, I have made it my purpose to help others resolve their internal pain and heartache. Although I tailor my approach for each client, I tend to consistently utilize EMDR, psychodynamic, gestalt, DBT, and narrative theoretical orientations.

I specialize in working with mood disorders, ADHD, social isolation, interpersonal conflict, trauma and chronic pain.
Whatever struggle has brought you here, welcome! I believe the first step toward healing takes courage and making a connection with the right therapist is the most important part in beginning that journey. If you are feeling stuck in old patterns of thinking or behavior, or carry the burden of deep, unresolved pain from your past, or, if you need a safe, supportive place to be heard and heal, I would be honored to help.

I am a Psychologist in private practice working with individuals and couples, adolescents and adults. I have worked in many different clinical settings since 1968 and, for 38 years of private practice, have worked with a range of difficulties involving anxiety, depression, addictions, abuse, obsessions, parenting, trauma and PTSD, personality disorders and psychosis. One specialty has been using psychological testing to get a more accurate and detailed diagnostic picture of the issues, as just having a diagnosis is not enough and can result in misunderstanding and poor treatment.

My work and research on mindful resonance in the healing of trauma has been published.
I have a very integrative practice, using EMDR with Mindful Awareness in the treatment of trauma. Whether you suffer with symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, or poor self esteem, the EMDR process will help you to go beyond alleviating symptoms and help you to find a greater sense of purpose and satisfaction in the direction of your life. As part of an integrative wellness center, I teach meditation as well as provide psychotherapy. As consciousness evolves and healing occurs, I will help you see how the crisis becomes a doorway for growth beyond what you could have imagined.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
