Psychotherapy can be a deeply nourishing gift to allow oneself. It is valuable to afford ourselves the time and space to be heard, seen, and understood. It can also be an opportunity to do the inner work and skill building that is necessary for us to unfold toward our truest potential. In times of crisis therapy can be a life line, keeping us connected to a light in the dark. Grounded in psychodynamic, somatic and intersubjective theories Michelle's work investigates the relationship between emotion, body and psyche. Issues related to relationships, parenting, trauma, and more may be explored.

I am a psychologist with over thirty years experience treating childhood disorders. My experience has been that early childhood therapy and parent-training are most effective, and emotional healing occurs most readily, when parent and child are seen together. Focus during, and between sessions, involves teaching of play skills and modeling of effective limit setting. For older children, self modulation of behavior is a primary objective. Utilizing these techniques, I have successfully treated anxiety problems (such as selective mutism), depressive symptoms, and developmental disorders (such as Aspergers Syndrome).

I am a Psychologist in private practice working with individuals and couples, adolescents and adults. I have worked in many different clinical settings since 1968 and, for 38 years of private practice, have worked with a range of difficulties involving anxiety, depression, addictions, abuse, obsessions, parenting, trauma and PTSD, personality disorders and psychosis. One specialty has been using psychological testing to get a more accurate and detailed diagnostic picture of the issues, as just having a diagnosis is not enough and can result in misunderstanding and poor treatment.

Are you feeling like every small request (brush your teeth, turn off the tv, put your toys away) turns into a battle in your home? Are you sick of the talking back and disrespect from your son or daughter? You've tried the "positive parenting" and it just does not seem to be working. Now, you feel like a terrible parent, always fighting with your kids. We hear this exact story over and over again at our office. Truth is, raising respectful children that listen is not easy! But we can help you implement changes in your interactions with your kids and get you back to feeling in control and in love with parenting again!

Are you a parent noticing your child struggling at home, school, or with friends? Do you have a suspicion that your child might be on the autism spectrum or perhaps in the grip of a cycle of anxiety or anger? Does your child spend too much time online and not enough time connecting with others and the world around them? Perhaps you are not seeking support for a child, but instead for yourself. Many adults struggle with these very issues. All of these things can lead to a great amount of stress for children, adults, and their loved ones. I'm glad you're here and I'm here to help.

I also have over eight years of experience successfully working with clients who experience recurring and persistent depression issues as well as individuals who may be suffering from narcissistic parenting and/or intergenerational trauma.
Trying to pick the right therapist can be a challenge. You can think of our first meeting more like a conversation, where we will go over what you are experiencing and how I can help you materialize your goals, values, and priorities. I offer a safe, comfortable, and compassionate space where we can explore how to reduce your suffering and help you get to where you want to be. For years, I have made it my purpose to help others resolve their internal pain and heartache. Although I tailor my approach for each client, I tend to consistently utilize EMDR, psychodynamic, gestalt, DBT, and narrative theoretical orientations.

I utilize integrative & holistic approaches, helping people to understand how their body, nervous system/brain & mind are at work & are impacting issues like anxiety, depression, learning & parenting.
Often times the most challenging periods of life are when we are in transition or beginning a new chapter. Are you a young adult, maybe beginning college or not sure of next steps to take. Perhaps you’re feeling overwhelmed at all the new expectations, social dynamics, freedom and responsibilities. Parenthood is another huge life transition. Perhaps you are pregnant, newly postpartum or your child is going through a difficult time? Anxiety & depression are common feelings during such times. How are you coping? I would love to help you explore and grow as you move through this moment in your life!

Are you a parent of a teen and feeling worried about how they are managing the stress of adolescence? Maybe they are staying up late into the night trying to complete homework, putting too much pressure on him or herself, starting to date, having more peer conflict, experimenting with drinking, starting to drive, taking things out on you? The array of stressors placed on teens and parents of teens is overwhelming! Teens often struggle to confide in their parents and their parents are anxiously trying to know what is going on. This tends to lead to tension and conflict in the relationship, which makes everything more challenging.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
