With more than 25 years experience, I am skilled in treating adults, adolescents and married couples. I believe that the symptoms that a person brings to my office, such as anxiety and depression, are the result of distortions in his or her relationship to him/herself. These are created in infancy, childhood, and adolescence via unconscious processes.

People have the ability to change. I can help facilitate this process by offering you a therapeutic relationship that is honest, interactive and warm. I use a range of interventions including psychodynamic, interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral to meet the unique needs of each individual. Overall, I believe it is valuable to understand the "why" of behavior, and also to make specific changes that lead to growth and greater fulfillment.

Are you stuck in a vicious cycle where work gets in the way of life and life gets in the way of work? When you are at work, you are stretched too thin, surrounded by stressed out, negative people, and convinced that you will never get to the bottom of your email inbox. At home, while trying to stay on top of the dinners, laundry and homework you are consumed by guilt, worried that you aren’t present enough for your loved ones and convinced that you will wake up one day having missed all of it. As you lie in bed at night, playing out your day, you think: “I’m failing at work, I’m failing at home. Will things ever change?”

I chose this specialty because I feel strongly that there should be More Options for pain and chronic symptoms then just "medication/surgery.
Tired of hearing "get better" and you having to wrestle with wanting to explode because you really wish that You Could ...Just... Get better!" You remind yourself that people mean well and manage a faint smile to reassure them, all the while feeling drained and consumed by all that it takes to just appear "okay." You barely even know how to answer "that" question any more. You're not alone, and you can find relief. Get Better with my guidance and NO more adding medication or surgery. Brief Profound Treatments available as well as moderate/long term treatments. HABLO ESPANOL TAMBIEN (Spanish speaking as well).

I work with individual adults with a variety of problems in living and believe in intermittent therapy throughout one's life. My private practice is small and focused on people coping with anxiety, chronic illness including chronic pain, depression, eco-distress, and general stress management. It's not easy being a human, and you don't have to go it alone. If you're looking to enhance your self-esteem or self-kindness, learning to be assertive, or wanting to be seen for who you really are - and knowing yourself who this is, I am here to support you.

I have a rich background in working with people with chronic illness as well as trauma and anxiety.
I believe that everybody has the ability to make changes to their life. I primarily work with people who struggle with chronic illness as well as anxiety and trauma. I find that when struggling with something like chronic illness there is often an impact on ones mental health. It may impact relationships, work, self-esteem, body-image, and much more. You may need support in how to address issues with your medical team or how to ask for support from loved ones. Whether you are newly diagnosed or have had your illness for years i find navigating all that it entails can be very challenging.

Together we will explore how our brains, our bodies, our pasts, and our culture create pain and suffering.
For many people, life has never felt like more of a challenge. Maybe things were pretty good before the pandemic, but now you, your friends, your family, or your work are hard to recognize. Or maybe the pandemic has made already tight things much tighter. I work with teens and adults who struggle with motivation, identity, relationships, and finding and sustaining hope for a more stable and serene life. I use current psychological research to supplement traditional psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapies.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
