Counseling varies depending on the personality of both the therapist and the client and the particular problems that you may be experiencing. I want to help you address the problems you hope to address. Often this includes building skills to: reduce feelings of distress, improve relationships, communication with others, and/or to resolve difficult personal issues. In order for therapy to be most successful, you will be asked to work on things we talk about both during our sessions and at home.

Mental health is just as important as physical health, and addressing your mental health is one of the best ways you can invest in yourself and your well-being. What does this look like, though? Well, it may be: challenging negative thoughts that pop into your mind late at night; finding the motivation to do the things that bring you joy again; breaking out of the cycles you have found yourself in for years and can’t seem to break out of; finally standing up for yourself and setting healthy boundaries; beginning to address your emotions in a healthier, more effective way; decreasing self-destructive behaviors; and more.

I work with individual adults in person and virtually to meet personal goals of improved emotional health and self confidence. Are you feeling increased anxiety, panic, depression, grieving a loss or reactivated past traumatic experiences? Are you experiencing changes in sleep? Find your mind won't stop worrying? Life can often be challenging. You may feel you've gotten "off track" and need some direction. You may be overwhelmed with things and don't know what to do or how to make it better. It may be starting to affect your relationships, and you don't know how to stop it. You may be wondering what's wrong with you and why this keeps happening, or whether you're depressed. Perhaps you're having panic attacks that come out of nowhere. Or maybe you seem to have developed social anxiety. Perhaps you just don't feel like yourself or aren't content with your life. You want things to be different, you just don't know how to make that happen. You might be wondering whether you're always going to feel this way. You've got a lot going for you, you've accomplished quite a bit, but it still feels like there's something missing. You're not sure what else to do. Most of us feel this way at some point in our lives. Especially when trying to handle the stress of life, relationships and the impact of certain events all at once.

I have worked with clients with issues such as marital problems, but they improved self-esteem, advocacy, and assertiveness in therapy, which reduced conflict with their spouse. My ideal client is someone motivated to change at the onset of therapy, who is committed to attending regular therapy sessions, identifies their goals, and focuses on a collaborative process to achieve their goals.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
