Working with a therapist can be viewed in many ways, but I often like to compare it to shoe shopping; you may get lucky on the first pick, or you might have to try on a few pairs before making the purchase. However, when you find the right fit, it may take you to places you’ve never been before. Choosing a therapist you can trust and feel at ease with can make all the difference by leading to a path of empowerment and growth. We cannot escape or undo the pain of past experiences, but we can explore unaddressed emotions, improve our ability to cope, and manage conflicts that prevent us from finding a peaceful balance.

For over 20 years I have helped clients work through aspects of their lives they find most challenging. Understanding how these difficulties affect ongoing non-productive communication, help to restore positive relational patterns and everyday interactions. Intense verbal or non-verbal chronic behavior may leave partners feeling angry, hurt or confused. Learning to observe and repair complex perceptions, helps to soften negative and reactive behaviors. Gestures, tones and shouting are all forms of communication. Each may create tension, anger or even total withdrawal. The ability to process conflicting needs allows for acceptance.

My style and beliefs are to create a safe environment within which individuals, couples, and families can explore their issues and challenges. I do this using brief solution focused therapy embedded in a narrative view. This means that I assist people in seeing their lives in more healthy ways as they overcome the challenges in their lives. This occurs in an atmosphere of empowerment and growth.

My approach to therapy is psychodynamic with a touch of humanistic theories such as emotion-focused, feminist, and narrative.
You may be here experiencing emotional pain, feeling stuck, sadness, fear, or generally unheard or not understood. You may have experienced different kinds of loss or trauma but have never had space granted to hold or process it. Perhaps you’re looking to more fully understand who you are and dive deeper into why, or just a space to unload daily stresses. Shame and guilt can show up in our lives in ways we sometimes don’t quite understand. While I do work with many populations, I find I work well with women and LGBTQIA+ folx who have endured, searching for someone to truly listen, hear, and empower to live with authenticity.

Developing a fresh perspective and a healthy inner narrative can be achieved through challenging one's thoughts, feelings and behaviors in an environment of acceptance, trust and safety.
You are right...life can be messy and at times, hard and overwhelming. It doesn't have to be this difficult, draining and challenging. The experience of stress, anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions and trauma all impact our ability to be fully present in our lives. As we move forward in an uncertain world, now is the time to empower self care, healing, inner peace, and confidence. Searching for support is an important step towards living an authentic and positive life experience. You, your feelings, and your goals are a priority. Together we can work toward rising above the mess and helping you achieve your best self.

From here, I work with a variety of techniques, including CBT, Narrative therapy, Positive Psychology and Motivational Interviewing.
My dedication to this field comes from my interest in working with people and being inspired by their ability to change and persevere when motivated and engaged to do so. I am particularly experienced in helping couples who are struggling with communication and/or family issues. I also treat adults and older adolescents with life stressors and challenges, including anxiety, depression, social discomfort, parenting, goal stagnation, and personality issues. My early work in addiction makes me qualified to help clients assess their relationship with substances and develop a plan with them, and their families, to address it.

I am also thoroughly delighted to join my clients on their journeys in working through struggles relating to their religious/spiritual identities.

My approach is integrative of many therapeutic models (CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy) and I strive to adapt my approach such that it will best resonate with you and your process.
I am a clinical psychologist with 10+ years of experience. My areas of expertise include depression, anxiety disorders, substance use, acculturation, and relationship/interpersonal difficulties and more. Being an Asian immigrant and having lived in different countries (Hong Kong, Malaysia, England), I understand the struggle of having misaligned values and ideals from the people around us. However, these experiences have also helped me connect with people of different cultures and mentalities, and have helped me to understand how people relate to their own mental health.

Welcome! I am a strengths-based, systemic therapist. I specialize in working with clients across all age groups, though I find particular joy in supporting young adults, couples, and parents with young children. While I tend to use a blend of narrative and attachment-based strategies to help my clients achieve their goals, I like to tailor treatment to each client's unique needs and preferences. If there's something you want to try in therapy, let's talk about it!

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
