I am passionate about working with children and adolescents in a way that is developmentally responsive and engaging! My office has a full-size play therapy room with supplies for expressive arts and sand tray therapies as well, so your child has many options when it comes to how they want to express themselves. I work with children, adolescents, and families on a broad range of issues, from life transitions (e.g. divorce, moving) to trauma. Each patient's unique needs dictate the course of therapy, and frequent re-evaluation ensures we are on the right track.

Counseling is a process of building relationships, and for the past 30+ years, I have been building relationships across a wealth of life-experiences: as a teacher and life-long learner, an administrator in higher education and healthcare, a parent of adult children, a daughter with a complex upbringing.

The capacity for change is within us. Sometimes we feel stuck or stagnant--maybe it's with a close relationship or even with ourselves. This setting is a quiet place to talk, to explore, to be curious and to enjoy the connection of talking with a trained, reliable and ethical professional therapist with over 25 years experience.

You may be struggling to cope with the everyday hardships that life has thrown at you. We live in a complicated and ever changing world. I have seen first hand the troubles brought on through life transitions, relationship troubles, job loss, the loss of a loved one, stress, substance abuse or other issues. These problems can often become debilitating. In therapy, we can work together to identify coping skills, build inner strength and uncover potential barriers that are keeping you from becoming your best self.

I am glad that you took this step to care for your well-being. We all have times in our lives when we feel unhappy, unbalanced and/or overwhelmed. Or maybe you find yourself repeating the same patterns over and over and would like some guidance on how to do things differently.

I welcome the opportunity to work with couples who are experiencing relationship issues and/or family conflict to find creative ways to resolve the conflict and strengthen the relationship. I also enjoy working with individuals who have experienced negative life events. Exposure to trauma at an early age often affects our lives as adults in profound ways making it difficult for us to maintain healthy relationships, to cope with stressors in non-destructive ways and to experience a consistent positive self image.

I believe each of us has the ability to heal from emotional wounds and the resulting damage to our sense of self worth. In order to heal, the source of the “original wound/s” must be identified and how these wounds are currently affecting our feelings, choices, and behaviors today. Personal boundaries are often affected and people pleasing/codependent relationships are also common. A willingness to put up with unacceptable and abusive behaviors as well. The first step in healing is in recognizing there is a problem. The next is the willingness to do the hard work. The best work one could ever do.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
