It has been a joy to work as a therapist for the past 20 years. I have been witness to much resilience, strength, healing and growth. My passion is working with individuals, couples and families, helping them to feel supported and validated as they increase peace in their lives, resolve issues and manage stressors and mental health symptoms. I have worked in the settings of my private practice, residential mental health, outpatient mental health, psychiatric emergency department and as a school social worker.

“I’m so tired but I can’t sleep. I lie awake at night feeling paralyzed and unable to breathe…my body feels hot, my stomach hurts and my heart races. I replay every embarrassing or shameful moment of my day…of my life… on repeat in my mind; I feel like a failure. I’m convinced that everyone is judging me. ‘What if…’ thoughts consume me. I never feel good enough!” Sound familiar? If you are tired of avoiding things, people pleasing, numbing, striving for perfection, worrying about everything…you are in the right place. I can help.

Life is messy and unpredictable. This can cause anyone to feel overwhelmed, anxious, fearful, and scared as you struggle with feeling out of control. If your child has experienced trauma or is struggling to navigate the complexities of growing up, they need a safe space to express themselves and heal; a space to be fully seen and heard without judgment. Children are worthy of understanding and compassion especially in times of distress. Receiving support through an authentic relationship can help children work through their big feelings.

On life’s journey we are constantly growing and developing. Whether young or old, life is a journey that usually entail efforts of trying to understand divine will. We often question our purpose in life, especially during challenging times. To keep it real, in many cultures/communities, such as the African American (Black) community, we might have been taught to either “pray” about our situations, issues, and emotions or “suck it up and keep it moving.” This can create negative energies such as anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, and other mental health issues that need to be addressed in a healthy manner.

I am a psychologist specializing in treating anxiety, including panic attacks and phobias, trauma, sleep issues, and perinatal mental health concerns. I create space in psychotherapy to process traumatic or difficult medical experiences through pregnancy and postpartum, unexpected loss and disappointments, and identity and self-esteem changes that come often along with motherhood. Other clinical areas of focus include depressed mood, ADHD, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Although I have training across the lifespan, I primarily work with adults and children ages 4 to 8.

I have daytime availability right now. I work with clients from early childhood to adulthood across various life stages. We partner to address “big feelings” and behaviors, as well as symptoms of anxiety, depression, ADHD, self-harm, and low self-esteem. My foundational approach is rooted in person-centered and strengths-based principles. With younger clients, I leverage techniques from play and creative arts therapies, as well as mindfulness tools. For adolescents and adults, I employ an eclectic toolkit with methods from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Design Thinking.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
