I specialize in the treatment of loss, trauma, which can include a spectrum of issues resulting from job loss, relationship breakdown, loss of a loved one, illness, questions of self-worth and self-esteem, depression and heart ache.
Working with individuals, couples, teens and children I have come to understand that we all want to be heard so that we may experience a healthier, productive life. Often, we experience conflict and troublesome behaviors that prevent us from feeling happy and satisfied. Depression, anxiety and a myriad of other self-defeating conditions or behaviors can emerge that interfere with our everyday relationships and can cause many difficulties in our lives. My approach is to work closely with you, through any issues, in an atmosphere of acceptance and support, designed to address your needs.

In a rapidly changing world, one can find it challenging to deal with feeling mad, afraid, sad or even glad! My aim is to help alleviate that pain. I use an integrative approach to understand your life experiences, feelings, and the reason for seeking counsel. I believe each person already has in them the potential to grow. A personal transformation through the process of psychotherapy can help facilitate this growth. Eventually, this will give you a greater understanding of yourself, others and the world around you.

As the causes of personal suffering are understood, the safe space of the therapy setting can provide a path out of the confusion and pain that may have become a way of life.
As a psychotherapist and healer for many years it has been my privilege to offer and provide help and comfort to people in distress. Experience has taught me that we all struggle to recover from the pains of the past, deal with the challenges of the present and the insecurities of the future, in our efforts to live the best lives that we can. This often seems very difficult if not impossible to accomplish alone. A strong and nurturing therapeutic relationship is a powerful and stable foundation for dealing with these challenges to our well-being, especially in these very troubling and uncertain times.

For children and families, I help them navigate the challenges of a medical situation by getting children to understand specific medical procedures and diagnosis, encourage them to be an active participant in their treatment. I also support them to express feelings over their illness, or the illness of their sibling, parents and other family members. For adult clients, I provide 'Pause and Reflect Coaching' service that through dialogue and creative means, (i.e. dance/ movement, role play etc), I facilitate opportunities for you to listen to your heart and make new decisions towards finding meaning in your next chapter in life.

If you are feeling lost, unfulfilled or overwhelmed, you can find relief. Facing emotions with support can bridge the gap from where we are stuck to where we want to be. Unresolved shame can keep us spiraling in fear and frozen in old patterns. Within the container of our therapeutic relationship, we can integrate pain from the past and access connection in the present. Healing can happen in a safe, nonjudgemental space where we can replace confusion and self-blame with curiosity and compassion.

Hello everyone, please welcome and allow me to first begin in thanking you. The choice to start therapy isn’t always easy, sometimes it is the most difficult thing to do is to even consider it, then admit you want/need it before even taking the steps to start, but you are not alone on this journey. Perhaps there has been times that you have found yourself feeling stressed, down, lacking confidence, or stuck in a pattern that no longer serves you. Perhaps you’re ready to take steps toward changes but feel stuck or unsure where to start. Or even feeling lost in your relationships in life or even disconnected from them.

Many people find themselves stuck in repetitive patterns of behavior and thinking that do not serve their well-being. Therapy helps to identify and examine these patterns in order to understand how and why they affect our sense of self, our moods, and our relationships in negative ways. Together we will uncover new ways of thinking and relating, and learn how to apply them in your life. The therapy room is a healing and safe space in which we can collaboratively explore the obstacles preventing you from fully achieving your life goals and break the painful patterns of relating to yourself and others.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
