Using an IFS evidence-based approach provides clients with inner resources to sustain them well beyond the therapist's office.
"History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived; however, if faced with courage, need not be lived again". Facing pain and brokenness of the deepest kind requires amazing strength and courage! Counseling is a unique opportunity to connect w/ the overwhelming issues that can block one's most earnest efforts to "do it differently this time". I'd consider it an honor to work with you as you come to understand your story--whether anxiety, discouragement, addictions, relationships. I look forward to collaborating with you in this challenging, yet rewarding work, as you move toward freedom from any concern that holds you back.

Do you feel stuck? That your symptoms limit what you do and make your life small? Do other people just tell you to “get over it”? Since you’re here reading this you probably already know that these people are wrong. The best way to deal with our problems isn’t by pushing them aside, but by facing them. Running away only makes the problem grow bigger and we end up losing more and more control over our own lives, missing out on all the things that give life meaning. If you’re unsure how to move past difficult situations and triggers and want to see what else life holds for you, therapy might be a great next step.

What I love about therapy is when I see that light bulb go on over someone's head. Discovering something from a new point of view, healing an old wound. Like a midwife, I work with the client to create the conditions for them to heal themselves. Some of my clients come for treatment of trauma, or for other causes of distress. First we have to develop safety. Client's learn to have a relationship with their feelings. Rather than reacting, they learn to cope with their distress. Ineffective beliefs about self, born out of past pain, dissolve in the light of the client's new awareness. For some, this is done with EMDR therapy.

My ideal client is someone who is seeking guidance regarding issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, marital and/or family dynamics, and transitions. This client also asks the question, “Who am I? What has happened in my life that has led up to this moment?” In my care, this client will be listened to and validated in a non-judgmental, non-biased point of view. If this client is willing to put in the work to answer these questions of life, I’m more than happy to work with them.

With the relentless demands of work, family, and social lives, it’s easy to feel worn down and alone in navigating it all. Therapy provides a safe and confidential space to help you think through the obstacles you’re facing, with an objective listener supporting and guiding you to a deeper understanding. I’d love the opportunity to hear your story and provide a fresh perspective on the challenges you face.

Hi, welcome! My name is James; I am white, queer, neutrois, neurodivergent, adopted, chronically ill & a survivor. Where I am, so are my identities, including the work I do as a therapist. As a queer neurodivergent person, I am passionate & committed to supporting folx, through therapy, advocacy & social justice efforts, in the LGBTQIA2S+ & neurodivergent communities (regardless of whether an “official” diagnosis has been obtained). The kind of therapeutic space I aim to provide is one that is affirming, culturally responsive, attuned, trauma-informed & transformational.

Not accepting new clients
Please note that I am currently not able to accept new clients at this time. Therapy, at its core is about self-discovery. Through a process of curious and compassionate inquiry into the truth of our situation, we gain insights that open space to unencumber ourselves. Often, what we had initially seen as problems can dissolve altogether. I like working with people whose lives have reached an impasse where they need to generate new options to untangle their dilemma. What we need to realize is that the predicament is, ultimately, the doorway to a greater understanding and fulfillment of our lives, both inner and outer.

Using teachings from the world's great religious traditions, techniques from various psychotherapies (such as Cognitive-Behavioral, Internal Family Systems, Non-Dual, Spiritual Self-Schema, etc.
Step into the realty that YOU are the Ancient, Eternal, Infinite, One, and Unchanging LIGHT shining through the flesh-and-blood prism known as the self. In other words, YOU are the Driver, and what YOU see in the mirror is the Vehicle. Like every good mechanic, I listen to both Driver and Vehicle. Remember: You are NOT anxious, depressed, or fearful, your vehicle is.

I take a collaborative and insight oriented approach to therapy, utilizing modalities such as internal family systems, narrative therapy, and attachment theory.
Sometimes we end up living our lives based off of other people’s values, expectations, or societal norms rather than figuring out what feels true for us. And before we know it, life can feel like an old sweater that once was cozy, but doesn’t quite fit right anymore. We are growing and changing humans after all! Therapy can be a place where we practice taking off our masks, and discover our own truths. Where we learn about who we are underneath other’s expectations, and in turn strengthen feelings of pleasure, joy, and deepen relationships.

I specialize in TF_CBT, IFS and in TBRI.
I enjoy assisting parents and other caregivers (teachers, daycare providers, therapists and caseworkers, etc) to make sense of their own past in order to be fully present in their current relationships. My primary focus is on children and families who have been through challenging experiences, including traumas.

I also have trained in IFS, AEDP, and coherence therapy, which have all deepened my experiential repertoire.
I look to cultivate a space for vulnerability and healing by focusing on the present together. This space allows folks to make contact with their deeper selves and experience how they relate to both themselves and others. By attuning to this awareness together, we can face your most rejected parts, develop insight into what matters most, and process your suffering with safety and support. We do this by focusing on all parts of your experience, exploring how your past continues to affect your present, and challenging the ways we repress and avoid—all the while fostering a relationship that is nonjudgemental, safe, and accepting.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
