Everyone could benefit from speaking with a trained professional whether you need to check in with an objective sounding board, achieve personal growth or navigate challenges encountered within your life. Sometimes the thought of something can seem worse than the actual experience, or dwelling on situations intensifies feelings. I am a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist with expertise treating a range of mental health conditions across the lifespan while specializing in depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma and relationships using Cognitive Behavioral Therapies and the Gottman method for individual and couples therapy.

I helped people navigate a variety of topics, including anxiety, codependency, substance abuse, relational issues, ADHD, gender/identity exploration, and religious trauma, among others. My ideal client is ready to explore, ask questions, and get to the root of things. They want to improve their relationship with themselves and others. They are an active participant in the therapeutic process and are willing to work with me to explore solutions.

My ideal client would be willing to work with me systemically, meaning someone willing to look beyond themselves and think, “Why is this happening?” instead of just thinking they are the problem. For example, if someone is coming in to work on depression and anxiety, my ideal client would be willing to explore the underlying issues contributing to the depression and anxiety instead of someone who is only looking for coping skills and such.

The parts of ourselves that we struggle with are sometimes our greatest assets. Therapy can be a place to better realize our strengths and identify where long-term patterns of narratives and behaviors are no longer serving us. I am passionate about working with LGBTQ and POC on topics such as: gender/sexual identity, anxiety, depression, OCD, acculturation, multiracial identity, social skills, and relationships. Oftentimes religion and spirituality come up in my work. My therapeutic approach incorporates both systemic and relational pieces. We do not exist in a vacuum. All of our experiences shape the person we are today.

From a therapeutic perspective, I believe in "meeting people where they’re at." I also consider therapy a great way of finding what a beautiful life looks like for each and every person, with an understanding that we’re all different, but with some commonalities amongst us. I find that we can all find pockets of peace no matter how chaotic our lives are, and I love to help others find that too. I believe in combatting the “perfect” world social media has created by offering a real person to help support you, not a textbook robot.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
