Accepting NEW clients. Serving all of WNY via in office sessions located in the West Seneca/Elma area or telehealth. Life by design creates challenges. Some of these we can anticipate and prepare for while others we simply cannot. It is in the unexpected moments we may encounter feelings that are new to us, more intense than we have ever felt, and may seem unbearable. This can leave us feeling lost or hopeless. We are not lost. We are not hopeless. Allowing these feelings to be felt is key to moving forward through the experience. Sorting through these emotions will help us discover steps to relief that work for you.

Not accepting new clients
Currently not accepting new patients. When life presents us with challenges and unexpected turns, we are given options for an opportunity for change; to not allow them to define our present or our future. Many of us face difficult situations that can get in the way of a full, satisfying life. Each individual has the strength within to grow and find a healthy balance. Sometimes, we need a little extra guidance to see that life's challenges can be transformed into healing opportunities. Therapy can offer a breath of hope to those who feel lost, stuck and alone.

My approach to therapy is collaborative. We may work with a variety of issues that include anxiety and depression, grief, end of life issues, chronic illness and pain, existential crises, men's issues, and relationship difficulties. Alongside therapy, my work has helped give me a perspective that addresses every stage of life and its challenges. We can approach such challenges together, ranging from young adulthood through those near the end of life. It's always an honor to accompany people on a journey of self-discovery and who have taken this first brave step toward healing. I would be honored to take it with you.

Meaningful positive change is possible, and it starts with taking the risk to do something different. That is brave work, and I am here to support people in doing it. I believe it's possible to relate to any experience in a way that allows for peace and growth. That doesn't mean it is easy. Life can be difficult, and harder to navigate if we've not been able to address past adversity and missing pieces. Through experience, I've found self-compassion to be key in healing and growth. It can be cultivated. My approach is collaborative, direct, and supportive. I welcome people as they are, and am open to learning from my clients.

We may experience things in our lives that feel like they change who we are and our view of the world. As a result, we may feel loneliness, distrust, anger, sadness, numbness, shame, and guilt. We may not allow ourselves to experience the wide range of human emotions and limit our connection with others as a way to protect ourselves. I believe that people are resilient, able to heal from trauma, and can reconnect with their authentic, genuine selves.

“The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” (Carl Rodgers) We can’t change what we do not explore and the first step in the direction of that journey is always the hardest. But you are here already taking that step, looking for someone to assist with the change that you seek. Everyday life can be in the way of focusing on healing from our past, management of stress/mental health issues and making changes for our future. Setting aside time for yourself is important! You are important!

Come, tell me everything, I will listen with an open heart. Life is too short to have an inner voice not be our best friend. A favorite quote of mine by Heraclitus is: “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man.” An ancient phrase of wisdom that speaks incredible truth. It is my intention to affect those living and coping with often self-imposed restrictions or images of themselves. I will redirect, refocus and reframe negative feelings and internal dialogue that hold you back from uplifting mental health and helpful contributions to society.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
