Finding the right therapist for you can be a a difficult process. How do you determine if someone has the background and experience that is relevant to you as an individual? With over 24 years in practice, and a direct, caring approach, I try to provide a safe, non judgmental environment that is conducive to self exploration. As you gain insight into yourself and you will also gain insight into others. This often results in feeling more connected with those around you. My clients often report they feel freer and empowered to make positive changes in their lives.

Just another PT profile, right? Let's look closer. I see you've been trying to find a therapist and someone you can connect with. You may have experience in therapy and are looking to get back at it, or maybe this whole thing is confusing, and you don't know where to start. I am a licensed therapist that happens to be a flawed human. I help other humans address issues with addiction, complex trauma, dissociation, chronic pain and illness.

If you’re reading this, you already have the motivation to heal, the insight to know you need a change and the resourcefulness to seek support. You knew enough to get yourself to this page and I know enough to take you through the journey you may be scared of and yet eager for. Working as a specialist in eating disorders and trauma, I understand the highs and lows of being self-critical to the point of self-punishment, blaming yourself for the situation you are in and being stuck in an endless cycle of overriding your gut instinct in order to please others. Recognize that your intuition got you to these words.

When we're at our best we can take on new challenges with enthusiasm rather than fear. Bruce Lee said, "You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip or it can crash. Be like water my friend." Counseling is one way you can improve you're ability to face challenges or "be like water..." Together we can enhance your strengths to allow you to experience the changes you want to see in your life. Now providing telehealth only HIPAA-compliant video appointments.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
