I believe that each person holds within themselves everything they need to heal and grow in the ways they would like. I see the therapist's role as being one in which provides an environment of safety and care where the client can explore themselves authentically. It is through this authentic exploration, that the therapist can help the client discover how patterns and ways of being are keeping the client stuck and resulting in suffering. By bringing into awareness these aspects, the client and therapist can then work collaboratively to release the pain and explore new ways of being.

Perhaps you’ve noticed feeling more anxious or depressed lately, but aren’t sure why, or what you can do to feel like yourself again. Perhaps you’re struggling with relationship tensions, feeling stagnant at work or find yourself just more generally in a rut. You may be feeling well overall but want to get a grasp on certain issues in your life. Now might be the right time to break free of those patterns and explore other ways of thinking, feeling and being in the world.

You just made the first step toward making a change in your life! Throughout our lives, we experience emotions such as anxiety, anger, sorrow, shame, depression, or worthlessness. Often they are the result of the loss of a loved one, unresolved conflict (at home, on the job &/or within oneself), trauma, loneliness or isolation. I believe that what we perceive as problems are really opportunities to make lasting improvements in ourselves and to become more fully human. Life is a series of transitions; we are all a work in progress, and can often benefit from help along the way.

Much of the work will include examining and healing from trauma using psychodynamic approaches; however, sessions are truly guided by you.
Greetings to those seeking healing - I am Amanda Martell, LCSW. I work with women, children and adolescents. I have found that we all have something we are healing from. Whether it is anxiety, previous trauma, stress, or just needing someone to talk to for extra support - I am here to aid in a range of needs. I am lucky to have worked with women and children for the past decade. Besides my clinical work, I have a range of experience in the social work field that has allowed me to have a holistic understanding and approach to therapy. That being said, I believe it is imperative to heal from the past to grow into your higher self.

I draw from many different theories, but rely heavily on CBT and psychodynamic therapy.
I imagine you found your way here because you're looking for change— change in a relationship, change in your habits, or change in how you handle anxiety, sadness or stress. Maybe you have had enough of Coronavirus and need to figure out how to cope until life feels normal again. Whatever you need, my job first and foremost is to listen. You're the expert on yourself. I'm here to help you figure out the parts of you (and of life) that can be hard to manage.

I am passionate about helping clients who experience depression, anxiety and trauma. Many of my clients feel overwhelmed with feelings of sadness, loneliness, disconnection from loved ones, frustration, or a lack of motivation. I help these clients by providing them with a warm, nonjudgmental space to talk about their feelings. My approach to therapy is psychodynamic, meaning that I help clients make connections between what happens in their lives and their innermost beliefs, desires, and wants. I place strong emphasis on having a quality therapeutic relationship based on trust and mutual regard.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
