I listen empathically to help my patients develop self-compassion and awareness so they can develop acceptance and create change. I see my role as listener, supporter, and guide into the internal world. My job is to thoughtfully explore with you, this unknown terrain and come to know the resources, resiliency, and best self that already exists. I also believe that life is not all rainbows and unicorns. There are many up and downs. The question is how we get through them. We must explore all aspects of life to fully engage and fulfill our greatest potentials.

Life is constantly throwing change at us and we must learn to navigate and adjust. With your insight and willingness to be vulnerable you can gain awareness of what may be distorted thinking, their underlying causes and work through the challenges of changing what no longer serves you. Therapy can also help to empower you by helping to recognize what choices are in front of oneself. I have over 10 years of experience working with individuals to learn how to better manage anxiety, depression, mood disorders, relationship issues as well as perinatal obstacles.

I view my therapeutic role as a partnership in which I listen carefully and guide the conversation so that I can "hear" underlying themes and connections I can then share with the client as we work toward resolving their difficulties. In providing information related to the client's concerns, my work is still psychodynamically informed. This is especially important for clients interested in learning about themselves and their relationships in a new way (their feelings, anxiety, causes of symptoms, or errors in judgment) in order to free themselves from the misunderstandings, confusion, and emotional "clutter" holding them back.

Are you feeling stuck? Are you struggling to feel good about yourself or having difficulties with close relationships? Maybe you just want more out of life. Finding support through difficult times can be scary and sometimes our friends and families don't or can't understand. Working with a therapist in order to find support and direction through life's struggles is a brave endeavor. I bring humor and a collaborative spirit to meet you in the moment and help you find solutions.

Psychotherapy can help you to develop greater self awareness, deepen connections with others, and create a personally meaningful life. I see myself as a concerned and nonjudgmental partner in this process. I try to foster an atmosphere of safety in which you experience a sense of freedom to think and feel. Maybe you are having trouble adjusting to a new change or are feeling stuck; perhaps you repeatedly find yourself in unhappy relationships or conflicts at work and struggle with low self-esteem. It may be that your familiar assumptions and modes of behaving, which originally developed out of need, are no longer working for you.

I start with listening and seek to cultivate a perspective that enlivens, enlightens and unburdens. I use an integrative psychoanalytic approach founded in curiosity and collaboration to address problems relating to trauma, depression, anxiety or self-esteem that can undermine ones ability to thrive interpersonally, creatively, sexually or professionally. Whether it's a life-change, a search for meaning, creative blocks, frustration with the quality of relationships or something else, I will meet you there. Through listening and talking, we will explore internal experience and how it impacts relating to oneself and others.

I practice in both NYC and Dobbs Ferry; in person and virtually (depending on the day we meet). I draw on my clinical, activist and legal backgrounds. I work primarily with individuals and couples and in that work, I draw on Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), for which I have been trained. I also draw on my extensive expertise in working with trauma and attachment. I incorporate sensory or body-based modalities as we go and when relevant, I create room to explore how our political culture impacts our felt sense of well-being. I am an active presence in the room and I use both humor and authentic connection.

It can be hard to find a therapist who feels like the right fit, especially when you are grieving, overwhelmed, facing a challenge, or feeling stuck in repetitive patterns. With warmth, patience and authenticity, I work to create a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore your unique experiences and the meanings they hold. I work with adults who feel depressed, anxious, or struggle with significant life transitions, relationships, parenting, trauma, guilt, and shame. I am also passionate about supporting clients through all stages of grief, including anticipatory, ambiguous, and non-death loss.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
