It can be difficult processing who we are, what we have experienced, and how we should move forward in the face of adversity. I welcome individuals to share their story unapologetically and unpack their life experiences. I work to build a collaborative relationship that aims to empower and uplift while fostering safety and trust. I offer an affirming, safe space for people who identify as a POC and/or LGBTQIA+ to explore their identities holistically and deconstruct their own narrative within a larger system. Together, we can create a plan with your specific needs and goals in mind.

I tend to work with individuals who have challenges and curiosities related to self and identity, unconscious internal conflicts and defenses, attachment and relationships, and how one's past and social location shape the present. I am relationally grounded, attachment focused and trauma centered; I believe that understanding and healing occurs in the context of our relationships, and therapy at its core is the building and deepening of a relationship.

My clients come to me with various issues. They may want help managing depression or anxiety, a mental health diagnosis like BPD, a difficult life transition or issues such as racism at work. Some are just trying to take better care of themselves by setting boundaries with others. Many come to process and heal from past trauma. My clients have already had a certain amount of success in their lives and they know that caring for their mental health will help address areas where they are stuck. They want to understand how they have been affected by issues in their lives, why they feel and behave in certain ways and how to change it.

The work of getting to know ourselves more deeply is courageous, and I truly believe that we don’t have to do it alone. My mission is to help women of color and queer folks peel back the layers of life that are weighing on them, live more balanced lives, and as a result, have more fulfilling relationships with others and themselves. Sometimes we have an idea of what that may be and other times we may not, both are normal places to be.

I approach my therapeutic practice through an anti-oppressive lens with a combination of psychodynamic, humanistic, and relational theories. Oftentimes, words alone cannot fully capture a feeling, or experience, nor can they allow us to fully process our traumas. For those who are interested, I offer Art Therapy and EMDR Therapy to facilitate a more wholistic approach to your therapeutic journey. Additionally, as a queer, brown woman, I have a particular interest in supporting others who identify as BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+.

It is a privilege to be a therapist because patients entrust you with closely held and often pained parts of themselves, along with parts of themselves they are excited about and proud of. I see our work as the creation of a place where these different parts of the patient's self can come into the room and be acknowledged and recognized. Therapy is also a place where you, as the patient, can use my listening ear to help you withstand pain and anxiety. Please see my website: zanjacobusinsightpsychotherapy.com

It’s never too early or late to make a change in your life. Anyone can get stuck at any age and different points, because life can be filled with all types of stressors: relationships, school, work, loss, and maybe unknown. If you match with the right therapist, change can happen, because it happened to me. I changed careers in my 40’s and I've never been happier since working with clients of all ages- young kids- adolescents -late adulthood. People aren’t cookie cutter and therapy shouldn’t be either.

Life is about change and some changes are more difficult to navigate than others. When we are stressed, anxious or depressed, it is a sign that our lives are out of balance. My focus is on providing a safe, supportive, nonjudgmental and compassionate space for adults, couples, and families to share their experiences and to help navigate through some more difficult life changes [positive or negative]; to create more balance in your life. I enjoy working with clients who are motivated to make changes to improve their lives, find purpose, and meaningful fulfillment.
