We often forget, or are unable to provide ourselves ample space to take a moment and reflect on what we are experiencing throughout our development. We live disconnected from the messages our bodies communicate: through the tightness in our chest; the manner in which we respond to our partner; the late nights spent tossing and turning in bed. Allowing oneself the space to confront those messages enables one to confidently navigating your day to day experiences.

The brain, like the body, has a way of healing itself when provided the environment it needs to do so. I offer a calm and nurturing space for us to develop curiosity and capacity for change together. Much of my work is grounded in compassion and self-observation as a tool for both understanding and change. Whether you are looking for a specific change within yourself or seeking understanding in a broader sense, I will provide a warm and empathic environment to explore these issues. My style balances serious reflection with moments for humor and connection.

Searching for a therapist can feel discouraging at times and raise endless questions. What exactly am I looking for? Will I feel understood? Would I even benefit from therapy? I believe that once you find the right fit, the transformative nature of the therapy relationship can help you find your voice and a true sense of direction. I approach therapy from a place of humor, curiosity and an honest desire to help you uncover those places where you feel most stuck in order to build the life that you want.

Therapy clarifies what has and hasn't worked in one's life. Together we will find a way to make your desired changes, so you can live a more fulfilling and authentic life. I provide a compassionate and honest environment in which you can feel heard and deeply understood. Guiding clients to discover their truths is, in large part, how I see my role, throughout which feelings around intimacy, loss, shame, and anger are often central themes. Couples counseling, addiction, divorce, co-parenting, sexual identity and sexual dysfunction issues are some of my specialties.

Do you feel stuck in a pattern and lost? Do you want to understand more about who you are and why you are running into certain issues? I believe that you are ready to take time to focus on yourself and to become more confident, comfortable and content. It is important to find a therapist who can listen and understand you. My goal is to ease your suffering by helping you to become more aware of who you are, while recognizing your values and priorities, as well as old patterns that may be getting in the way, and growing in acceptance and clarity.

I believe that as a therapist it is an important part of my job to demystify therapy. Many of us have preconceived notions of what therapy is based on movies and pop culture (think: someone lying back on a couch, talking while an abstract observer takes notes). Therapy with me is not like that. It is an active dialogue where we are discussing the issues that the person is facing. I bring my full and genuine self to the process, listen closely to what they are saying and what their goals are, and ask questions to help the person see connections and themes that help them gain new perspectives.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, stressed, burnt out, or anxious? Is it hard to remember the last time you felt "like yourself"? Is your anxiety interrupting your sleep or your day to day functioning? Do you feel stuck in a rut, unsure how to change course? Are you trying to make sense of childhood traumatic and/or significantly stressful experiences? Or have you recently experienced a traumatic event and want the stress and 'alarm bells' to decrease so you can feel the way you did before the event?

How do we deeply explore the difficult parts of ourselves with self-compassion and acceptance, while at the same time stretching to grow, evolve, and heal? Can we dare to live our lives in a way that realizes our full potential and what holds us back from doing so? It can be difficult to explore this all alone. In a gentle, nonjudgmental, and collaborative way, I provide support for my clients on their journey to become more fully themselves.

“The good life is a process, not a state of being.” -Carl Rogers (1961). My aim in therapy is to empower you and to help you discover what “the good life” means to you. We all need support on our journey through life’s ups and downs. Together we can figure out how to manage the good and bad moments through genuine, empathic, and healing therapy work.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
