If you experience overwhelming anxiety loops, feel the weight of grief, or are impacted by trauma - I might be a good fit for you. I can help by pointing out patterns or themes that I notice, explore how and why the brain is wired the way it is, and help you build up armor to face whatever life throws at you. A typical session with me includes talking, cursing, crying, laughing, questioning, and a whole lot of compassion.

I am licensed in both New York and California with over 16 years of clinical experience. I love working with folks who are looking to reflect on the things in their lives they want more and less of, the things that bring them joy and pain and work to maximize and minimize them accordingly. If you are willing to be vulnerable and open within a safe space and prepared to work through challenges and changes as needed, contact me for a consultation to see if we might work well together.

I'm drawn to Robert Frost's saying "the best way out is always through." It captures a sense of deep suffering and illustrates the type of relief that the process of therapy can bring. As a psychotherapist, I walk beside you on that journey. I offer a safe place for exploration and the accountability necessary for change. I am licensed in the states of New York and Georgia and see individuals as well as couples in my practice. In my work with individuals, I specialize in the areas of addiction, grief, and trauma. We’ll approach these topics with curiosity and compassion and go at a pace that works for you.

Each client is unique. Crisis, transition, relationship, workplace problems, coming out, depression, anxiety, identity, parenting . . . the list goes on. Nonetheless, the three phrases I'm most accustomed to hearing first are: "I'm completely stuck." "I don't understand why I feel this way." and "I just don't see a way out of this." It is important that we begin exactly where you are. Some of the issues you're bringing to therapy may first need practical attention in order to alleviate your current distress. Subsequently, we'll look for connections to the source of your issues and begin the healing process.

Beginning psychotherapy can be a very hopeful but intimidating experience. You may be wondering: What will a therapist make of my story? How is therapy going to really help me feel better? or resolve my problems? My goal is to help you understand what your emotions really are and how they affect your mind, brain and body. We tend to over-focus on our thoughts and tune out emotional experience. What is really healing is to have awareness of both and understand how thoughts and emotions work together to help you feel better or worse depending how you handle them.

When you lose the ability to connect with others or your connections are unfulfilling, you may choose to settle for just getting by. You may put on a happy face because it seems easier while pushing more painful emotions aside. Maybe you fear if you show your true self you will lose control or worse, be seen as unlovable. You feel stuck - perhaps struggling to even identify what is causing you pain. I get it. Facing fear, shame, self-doubt or past injuries can be overwhelming and the prospect of change daunting, especially when you think you have to do it by yourself.

Are you often self-critical, with a negative or harsh voice in your head? Do you experience shame, “not good enough-ness”, and unworthiness? Maybe you’ve had these feelings and thoughts for a long time, learned from past traumatic experiences or an unsupportive environment you grew up in. These experiences are painful and can hinder you from living a more rewarding life. If this sounds familiar, I understand and I’m here to help. I specialize in working with anxiety, complex trauma, self-criticism, relationship difficulties, life transitions, sexuality, and gender.

Are you living the life you want? Is your relationship a source of pain for you? Are you arguing more, trusting less, or finding yourself not looking forward to spending time together? Maybe your relationship feels stuck, like you're just replaying the same disagreement over and over again. Do you not like the person you are when you're in a relationship or wonder why you keep repeating patterns in the type of person you date? Human beings are wired for connection, yet somehow the people we are closest with also seem to cause us the most pain.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
