First - I love my work. Everything else flows from that. I have been a psychotherapist for more than thirty years and have studied a variety of theoretical and practical techniques to help people in emotional pain. I have a Masters Degree in Social Work and a Certificate in Psychoanalysis. The most important thing for a therapist is to begin with the patients' concerns and feelings. As the great Rabbi Hillel said: "the rest is commentary."

My experience is primarily focused on LGBTQIA+ adults and those facing a chronic illness, but all are welcome.
Maybe you are moving through a major life transition, a loss, or pain that you’re not sure you can bear. Maybe you have had to ignore your own needs in order to survive. We all hide the parts of ourselves that we have been made to believe are too much; when that approach stops working, if we have the right support, we can grow. Rather than suppressing symptoms, my approach is to work collaboratively to address the cause of your concerns. We have a path forward once we know what is making you feel so stuck.

Together we can identify your defenses - the ways you keep yourself safe and the pain away but also keep you stuck and take away your sense of well-being.
When you lose the ability to connect with others or your connections are unfulfilling, you may choose to settle for just getting by. You may put on a happy face because it seems easier while pushing more painful emotions aside. Maybe you fear if you show your true self you will lose control or worse, be seen as unlovable. You feel stuck - perhaps struggling to even identify what is causing you pain. I get it. Facing fear, shame, self-doubt or past injuries can be overwhelming and the prospect of change daunting, especially when you think you have to do it by yourself.

In addition to my private practice, I have worked in a variety of agency settings and have experience with a range of issues (depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, identity, relationships, life transition, chronic illness, stress, divorce/separation, retirement, addiction and anger).
Finding a therapist can be a daunting process. I believe it is important to feel at ease in order to do the work therapy entails. I provide a comfortable, down-to-earth environment that will allow you to develop insight, find more choices in your life, and to build self confidence. I have advanced training in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy, however unlike classical analysis I do not act as a blank screen and have a contemporary approach. I provide feedback and believe in mutual collaboration between patient and therapist.

Are you living the life you want? Is your relationship a source of pain for you? Are you arguing more, trusting less, or finding yourself not looking forward to spending time together? Maybe your relationship feels stuck, like you're just replaying the same disagreement over and over again. Do you not like the person you are when you're in a relationship or wonder why you keep repeating patterns in the type of person you date? Human beings are wired for connection, yet somehow the people we are closest with also seem to cause us the most pain.

When you choose to begin therapy, a match is pertinent to growth and change. I am direct, warm and will help you confront some of the more challenging aspects of yourself. My goal is always to facilitate living the best life you can. Keeping that in mind, therapy can be demanding at times, and requires a lot of patience with yourself and with the work; We will learn together how to communicate about what is happening in therapy beyond the conscious words that are used.

Connection. It’s what we are all looking for. Connection with ourselves. Connection with others. But how do we achieve that in a world that constantly forces us to disconnect in order to survive? To numb out, to run from conflict, to judge, to avoid our vulnerability. Our vulnerability is what makes us beautiful. Let’s get back to that beauty. Whether you’re struggling with romantic relationships, work and family stress, or trying to cope with the multiple crises happening around the world, I’m here to support you. I’ve been a therapist for more than a decade and have helped hundreds of people just like you.

I have published and presented on the topic of working with severe mental illness in community settings.
Life often leads us to existential confusion, self-doubt, and seeming psychological impasses that can impact our relationships, careers, creative life, and health. Behavioral patterns can seem intractable, and past trauma can resurface in the present, making day-to-day stressors a burden. I will collaborate with you on cultivating a non-judgmental curiosity about your experience, both past and present, and on finding more freedom and agency to lead life in a fulfilling and healthy way.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
