Focus includes: depression, anxiety, grief, loss of desire; relationship conflicts over personal values, attitudes, behaviors; sexual identity; non-monogamy and open relationships; orgasm; sex-related pain; trauma and other sexual disorders.
Choosing a therapist can be confusing and overwhelming, especially if you need to discuss issues related to sexuality or gender. I have a transparent, practical and easy-going style that is compassionate, culturally-attuned and helps my clients feel understood and at ease. The commitment to psychotherapy is challenging, vulnerable and courageous. It is not about aiming for perfection, but appreciating the ways in which you have continued to persist and fight for what you value and those you care about even in the face of all the messiness, conflict and struggle. My work is tailored to individuals, couples or networks.

Seeking therapy is a big step, sometimes challenging but always courageous. It's about understanding yourself without judgment, an essential step toward growth, healing, and quality relationships. I provide psychotherapy to a diverse population of clients, specializing in areas such as survivors of trauma, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, anger, family issues, couples' issues, depression, chronic illness, and grief. My practice is rooted in principles of affirmation, intersectional justice, harm reduction, and embodiment and holds the position that social oppressions and systemic problems operate as barriers to wellness.

In my practice, I take pride in treating everyone as an individual and consider differences in their histories, personalities and the different ways they cope with their emotional distress. I consider these differences and similarities extremely carefully whenever I design a patients treatment plan. BENEFITS There are five goals that are almost always achieved when under my care. 1)Increased insight or improved understanding of one's own mental state. This can range from simply knowing one's strengths and weaknesses, to understanding their symptoms are signs of mental illness, and to deepen their awareness and acceptance of inner feelings.

Greenpoint Psychotherapy is a holistically minded practice that functions on the premise that by allowing ourselves to accept and experience our emotions, we will increase assertive behavior leading to increased alignment between external & inner selves. We help clients with exploring how their past relationships and experiences continue to impact their present life, through identifying and changing thought patterns that have become unnecessarily negative or rigid, and learning to use difficult experiences to gain more insight about themselves so they are able to move forward with kindness instead of fear.

People usually come to therapy seeking relief from problems that have become intrusive, limiting or painful. Through talking in session, you will start to become aware of thoughts and feelings you didn't know you had, of desires hovering below consciousness. My job is to help you connect to your inner experience, and to provide an atmosphere of tolerance and curiosity where we explore it together. The process itself generates insight and emotional awareness. From there we work to transform what you're learning about yourself into positive change and self-assertion.

While our personal histories may inform our current struggles, it does not define who we are, or who we may become. Using an client-centred approach, I believe strongly in the power of self-efficacy, attachment theory, developmental psychology, family systems and neuroscience. Guiding my practice with trauma informed care, I assist clients in developing their unique resilience story. This begins with relational connection, warmth and radical acceptance co-created in the therapeutic environment.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
